Tragedy Strikes at Reno's Grand Sierra Resort
It was a chaotic and heartbreaking morning in Reno today, as a mass shooting took place just outside the Grand Sierra Resort—also known as the GSR. It all started around 7:25 a.m., when reports came in about an active shooter situation in the valet area of the resort. Within just minutes, officers from the Reno Police Department arrived on scene and confronted the suspect, who was described only as an adult male. Shots were fired by the police, and the suspect was ultimately hospitalized. His condition hasn't been released.
Sadly, two people were killed in the attack, and at least three others were injured and transported to local hospitals. There are also reports that some victims may have taken themselves to hospitals, so the total number of people affected is still being confirmed. Some responding officers sustained minor injuries—not from gunfire, but likely from the intense response effort. Thankfully, there’s no longer any threat to the public.

The incident took place primarily in the resort's valet area but extended to the north side of the parking lot. The area is currently closed off, and the Sparks Police Department has taken over the investigation, including the officer-involved shooting. Washoe County Sheriff's Office is assisting.
Grand Sierra Resort released a statement expressing deep sorrow, saying they were “heartbroken by the senseless violence” and thankful for the rapid response by their own armed security and Reno PD. Their quick action, according to the statement, likely prevented even more tragedy.
City leaders have begun responding as well. Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve and Councilman Devon Reese both offered condolences to those affected, with Reese calling it “a heartbreaking day for Reno.” Governor Joe Lombardo also confirmed that the state is assisting with the investigation.
While GSR remains open, operations are understandably impacted, especially in areas around the crime scene. People are being asked to avoid the northwest parking area and use alternate entrances.
Right now, the motive behind the shooting remains unknown. The community is left grieving, and the focus is on supporting the victims, their families, and everyone shaken by what happened. More updates are expected as the investigation unfolds, but for now, Reno is reeling from yet another painful reminder of the toll of gun violence.
