United Airlines Reshapes Lehigh Valley Routes with Major Service Shift
So, there’s been a big shift in air travel for folks in the Lehigh Valley—and if you’ve flown out of Allentown before, or relied on the convenience of connecting through Newark, this one’s going to catch your attention.
United Airlines has officially announced that it's ending its Landline bus service from Lehigh Valley International Airport (LVIA) to Newark Liberty International Airport. That’s right—the route that provided a seamless ground-to-air connection for travelers looking to tap into Newark’s global network is coming to a close. The final rides will be rolling out before the service permanently ends on September 1, 2025 . For a lot of us, especially those who appreciated the convenience of hopping on a bus at ABE and ending up airside at EWR without a hitch, this feels like the end of an era.

But it’s not all cuts and cancellations. United’s not pulling out—it’s pivoting. In place of the Newark bus connection, United is ramping up its direct flight options from LVIA. Starting August 19 , they’re launching a new midday flight to Chicago O’Hare International Airport . This flight will add to the existing early morning and late evening options, giving passengers more flexibility when connecting to the Midwest and beyond. Chicago O’Hare is a major hub, so this move seems clearly aimed at keeping United’s Lehigh Valley travelers connected—just in a different direction.
Now, why the shift? Passenger numbers tell part of the story. In May 2025 alone, LVIA saw an increase in traffic—up 2.6% from the previous year, with 87,448 travelers passing through. Allegiant Air and Delta saw positive growth during this time, while United and American experienced a slight dip— United down 5.4% , and American down 7.5% . It’s possible United’s making adjustments based on where the traffic—and the demand—is headed.
It’s also worth noting that while United’s Landline service is wrapping up, Trans-Bridge Lines will still be operating its buses between LVIA and Newark, so travelers do have alternatives. But for those who liked the integrated United booking experience from ground to sky, that seamless option is going away.
So yeah, big changes are happening. If you're planning travel from Allentown, keep an eye on these updates and adjust accordingly. Whether you're headed west via Chicago or finding new ways to reach the East Coast through Newark, the landscape is shifting—and it’s worth staying ahead of the curve.
