Zarah Sultana Resigns from Labour to Launch New Political Movement with Jeremy Corbyn
In an unexpected but electrifying political move, MP Zarah Sultana has officially announced her resignation from the Labour Party, stepping into a new chapter as co-founder of a fresh political force alongside former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. Speaking directly to the public via social media, Sultana revealed that she and Corbyn will jointly lead this new party, which aims to gather momentum from disillusioned MPs, grassroots campaigners, and citizens who feel abandoned by the current political establishment.
Sultana’s departure from Labour marks the culmination of tensions that began last year when she lost the party whip for voting to abolish the two-child benefit cap—an act of defiance she says she’d “do again.” That same boldness led her to vote against scrapping winter fuel payments for pensioners and to oppose the government’s recent welfare bill. Her voting record and vocal stances have positioned her as a consistent champion for the marginalized, even as it cost her alignment with Labour.

Now, alongside Corbyn, she’s taking that spirit of resistance to build what they describe as a genuine alternative to a political system they believe is crumbling from within. "Westminster is broken," Sultana declared. “But the real crisis runs deeper. The two-party system offers nothing but managed decline and broken promises.” She pointed to staggering inequalities, including the fact that just 50 families now own more wealth than half the UK population. Her message is clear: the status quo no longer serves the people, and it's time for something bold and transformative.
Corbyn, speaking on ITV's Peston , echoed those sentiments and hinted at a larger movement taking shape. He confirmed that discussions were well underway among the Independent Alliance MPs—many of whom have taken principled stances on Gaza, poverty, and foreign policy. With five MPs in the group, they match Reform UK and outnumber both the Greens and Plaid Cymru in the Commons. Corbyn emphasized the urgency of building a party rooted in peace, justice, and equality, distancing themselves from what he views as the centrist compromises of Keir Starmer’s Labour.
The launch of this new political initiative could fundamentally shift the UK’s political landscape. It has the potential to disrupt the left-of-centre vote and pose a significant challenge to Labour’s dominance in that space. But for Sultana and Corbyn, this isn't just about electoral strategy. It’s about giving voice to the voiceless, fighting for economic justice, and refusing to be complicit in policies they see as harmful or unjust.
Sultana’s final call to action resonates with urgency and defiance: “Join us.” As the UK heads toward its next general election, this new party could emerge as a rallying point for those disenchanted with mainstream politics, and for those who believe that principled leadership still has a place in public life.
