All Aboard for Fun at the PNE Fair with TransLink This Summer

The Pacific National Exhibition, better known as the PNE Fair, is back this summer, running from August 16 to September 1, and it’s bringing the perfect mix of thrills, music, and community fun to wrap up the season. This long-standing Metro Vancouver tradition has been enjoyed for 115 years, and once again, it’s offering something for everyone — from adrenaline-pumping rides at Playland to giant midway prizes, lively performances, mouth-watering fair food, and the always-popular Summer Night Concerts.

But this year, one of the coolest stops you can make is at the TransLink Zone, located just inside the Hastings and Renfrew Street entrance. Visitors are being invited to step aboard not one, but three unique transit vehicles. You can climb into the operator’s seat of a double-decker bus for that must-have photo op, admire a vintage 1957 bus carefully preserved by the Transit Museum Society, or relax inside the Outreach bus, where an onboard scavenger hunt is ready to entertain. For those who have ever hesitated to use the bus bike rack, this is the perfect chance to try it out at your own pace — proving that bike + transit really does mean endless adventure.

A special treat for the little (and not-so-little) ones is the TransLink-themed PNE Express Train. This relaxing $2 ride ($0 for kids three and under) winds through shady fairground paths, past the duck pond, and over charming bridges, with a stop near Toon City. And for collectors, exclusive TransLink trading cards will be given away — five different designs, one per visitor, while supplies last. Vehicle cutouts and the chance to win PNE Summer Night Concert tickets are also up for grabs at the booth.

The Transit Passport program is in full swing, with the PNE being one of the prime stops. Visitors can pick up their passport and get their first stamp right at the fair. Stamps are earned by visiting transit-friendly spots around Metro Vancouver, and completing the journey could win you a full year of free transit.

Getting to the PNE couldn’t be easier. TransLink has multiple bus routes stopping nearby, including the R5 Hastings St RapidBus, routes 14, 16, 210, and 211. The 16 PNE Special Bus runs every 15 minutes between 29th Avenue Station, Renfrew Station, and the Pacific Coliseum throughout the fair. Plus, on TransLink Fridays (August 22 and 29), showing your Compass Card or proof of transit fare will get you 2-for-1 admission — leaving more in your pocket for mini donuts and ride tickets.

From vintage buses to collectible cards, shaded train rides to scavenger hunts, the TransLink Zone is adding extra fun to the PNE Fair experience this summer. And with easy, affordable transit options, the journey there can be just as memorable as the destination.
