Arena Set to Officiate Atalanta vs Pisa Season Opener

Excitement is building for the 2025/26 Serie A season as Atalanta prepares to host Pisa in the opening match at the Bergamo Stadium this Sunday, August 24th, with kick-off scheduled for 8:45 PM CEST. The spotlight has fallen on the official in charge of the game: Alberto Ruben Arena from the Torre del Greco section of the Italian Referees Association. Arena, who is just 33 years old, will be taking the whistle for his second encounter involving Pisa. Interestingly, his first match with the Tuscan side came last August at the Tombolato against Cittadella, which ended 3-0 in Pisa’s favor by default due to a clerical issue with the team sheet.

Arena will not be alone in overseeing the match. His assistant referees will be Domenico Palermo from Bari and Mattia Politi from Lecce, while Livio Marinelli from Tivoli will serve as the fourth official. VAR duties have been assigned to Davide Ghersini from Genoa, with Daniele Doveri of Roma acting as the AVAR. With such an experienced officiating team in place, fans can expect the game to be managed smoothly, with key moments closely monitored.

Pisa, coached by Alberto Gilardino, is arriving in Bergamo with high hopes and careful preparation. The team has been keeping an eye on the transfer market while simultaneously fine-tuning their squad for the debut. Around a thousand Pisa supporters are expected to make the trip to Bergamo, despite the requirement of the fan ID card for entry. The squad has been working hard on the pitch at San Piero a Grado following a day of rest on Tuesday, with daily training sessions planned right up until matchday. Recovery for key players Meister and Denoon remains a priority, though Lusuardi is unlikely to feature on Sunday. The team is scheduled to travel to Bergamo on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Atalanta has been training at Zingonia, preparing without Lookman, who is continuing individual sessions under a personal trainer until the end of the transfer window. The stage is set for a competitive opener, with both teams eager to start the season on a positive note. With Arena’s appointment now official, all eyes will be on the pitch as Atalanta and Pisa battle it out in front of their fans. The anticipation is high, and the Serie A season is officially underway.
