Army Sergeant in Custody After Fort Stewart Shooting Leaves 5 Wounded
So earlier today, there was a really troubling incident at Fort Stewart in Georgia. Five soldiers were shot in what appears to have been a targeted act carried out by a fellow servicemember. According to officials, the suspected shooter is an Army sergeant who is now in custody. Thankfully, authorities have confirmed that the threat has been contained, and there’s no longer any danger to the public or others on base.
The shooting happened in an area that houses the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team—also known as the Spartan Brigade. This is a highly active combat unit, and the location is pretty secure, so something like this happening right inside their zone really caught everyone off guard. Emergency responders were dispatched just before 11 a.m. Eastern Time, and the entire base went into lockdown within minutes. By 11:35 a.m., the suspect had been apprehended.

The injured soldiers were first treated on site before being moved to Winn Army Hospital for further care. As of now, we don’t have word on their conditions, but it’s being reported that all five were injured during the same incident.
Digging into the background, it’s been revealed that the sergeant was previously arrested for DUI back in May. While it's not clear yet if that history had any bearing on today's violence, it's definitely raised questions about warning signs or whether this could’ve been prevented.
What makes this even more disturbing is the context. Fort Stewart is not just any base—it's the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River and home to the 3rd Infantry Division. More than 10,000 people, including families and civilian employees, live there. So when a shooting like this happens within such a tightly controlled military environment, it really sends shockwaves through the whole community.
Federal agencies like the FBI and the ATF have joined the Army Criminal Investigation Division to look into what led up to the incident. Officials at every level—from the Georgia governor to President Trump—have been briefed and are monitoring the situation. Several Liberty County schools near the base were also placed on a soft lockdown, though that has since been lifted. And this all happened on the very first day back to school for local students, which only added to the fear and confusion.
It’s a grim reminder that even in places designed to be secure, where discipline and structure are the norm, tragic violence can still erupt. A news conference has been scheduled for later today, where we’re expecting more details about the shooter, the victims, and the circumstances that led up to this horrifying moment.
