Aston Villa Thrash Roma but Suffer Injury Blow Ahead of Season Opener
In what was expected to be a competitive pre-season clash, Aston Villa sent a strong message with a dominant 4-0 win over Italian side AS Roma—but not without a cost.
The game, played just ten days before the start of the Premier League season, saw Villa absolutely tear through Roma’s backline. Goals came from Emi BuendÃa, Jacob Ramsey, and Ollie Watkins, who all looked sharp and confident heading into the new campaign. It was the kind of performance that made fans excited and hopeful about what’s to come—fluid attacking football, high pressing, and a clinical edge in the final third.

But amid the celebrations, there was a moment of concern. Morgan Rogers, who had come on after halftime, was forced off the pitch shortly after his introduction. He went down in clear discomfort and needed medical attention on the field. The physios checked his ankle, and although he tried to jog it off, he quickly signaled that he couldn’t continue. The timing couldn’t have been worse for both the player and the club, as Villa prepare to face Newcastle in their Premier League opener.
While the extent of Rogers’ injury isn’t yet confirmed, any setback this close to the season could be significant, especially for a young player trying to cement his spot in the squad.
As for Roma, this was their first defeat of the preseason, and manager Gian Piero Gasperini didn’t shy away from admitting the gap between the two sides on the day. He pointed out that although Roma tried to stay committed and showed moments of solid build-up play, they simply weren’t incisive enough. Gasperini gave credit to Villa’s pace and organization, admitting his side were caught out on several occasions. Still, he remained calm in the aftermath, noting that August friendlies are more about learning than results.
Among Roma’s few bright spots were young talents like Cherubini and Soulé, who tried to push forward and make things happen. Gasperini also singled out El Aynaoui for praise and acknowledged the need for more consistency, especially with the transfer window still open for a few more weeks.
In all, Villa’s performance will be remembered for its quality and sharpness, but the injury to Rogers is a cloud that could linger if it turns out to be serious.
