Bombers Bounce Back with Electric Win Over Argos

Alright, so let’s talk about this wild Week 9 CFL showdown between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Toronto Argonauts — it was anything but ordinary.

The Bombers came into Friday night’s game on a bit of a skid, riding a three-game losing streak. But they completely flipped the script and walked away with a 40-31 win at Princess Auto Stadium. And honestly, this one was defined by fireworks from every phase of the game — offence, defence, and especially special teams.

Now, if you only remember one name from this game, make it Trey Vaval. The guy absolutely stole the show. In the first half alone, he returned a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns — one was 93 yards, the other 97. That kind of performance isn’t just rare — it’s game-changing. Those returns helped Winnipeg build an early lead, and without them, the outcome could’ve looked a lot different.

What’s even more wild is that Chris Streveler, filling in for injured quarterback Zach Collaros, had a pretty rough night through the air. He threw three interceptions — not great — and one of those picks was actually taken back for a touchdown by Toronto’s Cameron Judge early in the game. But the Bombers responded immediately with Vaval’s first return, and just like that, momentum swung right back to Winnipeg.

And let’s not forget the defence — Willie Jefferson was a nightmare for the Argos' offence. He knocked down four passes at the line, had a strip sack, and that sack directly led to another touchdown, when Jay Person scooped up the fumble and took it 29 yards to the house. You could feel it — Jefferson was in Nick Arbuckle’s face all night. He completely disrupted both of Arbuckle’s late-game drives when the Argos were desperately trying to mount a comeback.

Meanwhile, Toronto’s offence got a little one-dimensional. They only ran the ball five times all game for a total of eight yards. That meant Arbuckle had to drop back constantly, and Winnipeg’s pass rush was just licking its chops. They pressured, they deflected, and they closed out the win.

Even though the Argos fought back — with Damonte Coxie hauling in two touchdown passes in the second half — it just wasn’t enough. Winnipeg had built too big of a lead, thanks in large part to those non-offensive scores.

So now, the Bombers improve to 4-3, back on track, and next up they’re facing the Stampeders in Calgary. As for the Argos, they fall to 2-6 and remain at the bottom of the East.

Bottom line? This game was a reminder that football isn’t just about the quarterback — special teams and defence can absolutely win you games. And on Friday night, they sure did.
