Brisbane to Rarotonga: A New Gateway to Paradise

Big news for Queensland travellers and island lovers alike! Starting in May 2026, Jetstar will officially begin direct flights from Brisbane to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands — marking Brisbane Airport’s 35th international destination and another big step in expanding its reach across the South Pacific.

This is huge, not just because it’s a new destination, but because it's the first time ever that Queenslanders will be able to fly straight to Rarotonga without any layovers. Jetstar will operate the flights three times a week — on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays — using their new, quieter, and more fuel-efficient A321neo LR aircraft. And the cherry on top? Launch fares have been announced at just $249 one-way, which is a great value for a trip to one of the most beautiful island destinations in the world.

The new route is a big win for both Queensland and the Cook Islands. Brisbane Airport’s CEO, Gert-Jan de Graaff, described it as more than just another flight — it’s about reinforcing Brisbane as the “gateway to paradise.” The airport already holds the title for having the largest network of direct flights to the South Pacific in Australia, and this new addition only strengthens that position.

For the Cook Islands, the impact will be even more significant. Prime Minister Mark Brown emphasized that tourism makes up around 75% of the nation’s GDP. This new connection is expected to provide a serious boost to the economy, especially for local tourism operators. It’s not just about welcoming new visitors; it's also about reconnecting with the thousands of Cook Islanders living in Queensland — the largest Cook Islander community in Australia.

There’s even a personal angle to this story. Brisbane Airport airside safety officer Tavake Mackenzie, who’s originally from the Cook Islands, shared how emotional the moment will be when the first flight lands — calling it a "long time coming" for families and the community.

And if you’re making the trip, don’t miss Aitutaki. Tavake had a great tip — it’s a 45-minute flight from Rarotonga and is often described as having the most stunning lagoon in the world. With its palm-lined beaches, turquoise waters, and warm island spirit, Rarotonga truly is a tropical dream.

So mark your calendars for May 2026 — paradise is about to get a whole lot closer for Queenslanders.
