Bruno Fernandes Slams 'Lazy' Display After Man United's Draw with Everton

So, over the weekend, Manchester United had a bit of a frustrating pre-season game in Atlanta, where they drew 2–2 with Everton — and their captain, Bruno Fernandes, wasn’t happy at all. In fact, he came out pretty strongly after the match, criticizing his own team’s effort and saying straight up that they were "a little bit lazy."

Fernandes had actually scored the opening goal himself, so things were looking good early on. Then Everton equalized through Iliman Ndiaye, but United regained the lead thanks to a tidy finish from Mason Mount in the second half. It seemed like they were heading for a win — until, out of nowhere, a bizarre own goal by Ayden Heaven in the 75th minute handed Everton a draw. And honestly, that moment summed up the kind of sloppiness Fernandes was clearly talking about.

Speaking to NBC Sports after the game, Bruno didn’t hold back. He said the team’s performance just wasn’t good enough, especially pointing out a lack of energy and sharpness — calling it “lazy,” which is a strong word, especially coming from the captain. He also made it clear that the squad still needs reinforcements. According to him, more quality players are needed to raise the level, to push those already in the team to perform better and earn their place in the starting eleven.

He was careful not to throw anyone directly under the bus, and he acknowledged that the club’s doing what it can within its financial limits. But the message was pretty clear — if United want to be competitive, more signings are a must.

The manager, Ruben Amorim, didn’t seem too bothered by Bruno’s comments. In fact, he welcomed them, saying it shows the players are aware of the club’s situation and what still needs to improve. Amorim also sounded optimistic about the preseason overall — he liked the atmosphere during the US tour, said it helped integrate the new signings like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, and believes they’re heading into the season with a solid base.

Interestingly, he also mentioned that he hopes to stay at United for 20 years — which is quite the long-term vision, especially at a club known for chopping and changing managers. Amorim says he has a good working relationship with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and feels supported as long as he can back up his decisions.

So overall, it’s a mixed vibe coming out of the United camp — some strong performances, a few frustrating moments, and clear calls from within the squad that more needs to be done before the season starts.
