Burnley in Talks to Sign Newcastle's Martin Dubravka
So, here’s what’s going on with Martin Dubravka and Burnley — and it’s a pretty interesting development in the transfer window. Burnley are currently in active discussions to bring in the Newcastle United goalkeeper, Martin Dubravka. This potential move comes right on the heels of some big changes at both clubs.
Newcastle have just wrapped up the signing of Aaron Ramsdale on a season-long loan from Southampton, which naturally shifts the dynamics of their goalkeeper lineup. With Nick Pope firmly holding the No. 1 spot, and backups like Odysseas Vlachodimos, John Ruddy, and Mark Gillespie also in the squad, Dubravka’s chances of regular playing time at St. James’ Park were looking pretty slim. So, understandably, talks with Burnley have gained momentum.

Now, for Burnley, this isn’t just a random move — they’ve had a bit of a shake-up in goal themselves. James Trafford, who played a big role in helping Burnley secure promotion from the Championship last season, was signed by Manchester City in July. They had matched an offer from Newcastle for him, and Trafford decided to go. That’s left Burnley needing someone with experience, and Dubravka seems to be high on their list.
Dubravka would actually be the second goalkeeper signing for Burnley this summer. They’ve already brought in Max Weiss, a 21-year-old from Karlsruhe in Germany’s second tier. But given Weiss’s age and experience level, Burnley clearly want someone more seasoned to take charge between the posts. That’s where Dubravka fits perfectly.
He’s 36 now and has been with Newcastle since 2018 — initially on loan from Sparta Prague, but he made such an impression that he signed permanently not long after. He’s made 179 appearances for the club and even won their Player of the Year award in the 2019-20 season. So we’re talking about a keeper with serious pedigree. He’s also earned 53 international caps for Slovakia, and even had a loan spell at Manchester United during the 2022–23 season, before returning to Newcastle that January.
With Burnley back in the Premier League and looking to solidify their squad, bringing in someone like Dubravka — who knows the league and has tons of experience — could be a smart move. Talks are ongoing, and while nothing is finalized yet, it sounds like this could become one of Burnley’s key signings of the summer if things go through.
