Caitlin Clark Still Out as Fever Face Mystics
Indiana Fever fans were once again left waiting for Caitlin Clark’s return, as the star guard continues to recover from a right groin injury that has kept her sidelined for over a month. Friday’s matchup against the Washington Mystics marked her 12th consecutive absence, adding up to 21 total games missed this season. For someone who never sat out during her college career at Iowa, or even in her rookie year with the Fever, this stretch has been completely uncharted territory.
Clark first went down on July 15 in the closing minute of a win over the Connecticut Sun. After delivering a crisp bounce pass to Kelsey Mitchell, she immediately reached for her groin, grimacing before walking off in visible pain. That would turn out to be her last appearance so far, and though the team has confirmed there’s no structural damage, the rehab process has been slow and cautious.

Fans keep asking the big question: is she playing tonight? And the answer remains no. Despite some encouraging updates — like Clark being able to run full court again — she hasn’t returned to practice, which means her comeback still isn’t close. Head coach Stephanie White has emphasized patience, noting that while Clark is moving better, game shape and practice reps are non-negotiable before she steps back on the court.
Injuries aren’t new to Clark this season. Before the current groin issue, she had already dealt with a left quad injury in May and a separate left groin strain in June. Each setback forced her to miss multiple games, leaving the Fever to piece together a backcourt rotation that’s been stretched thin. The team has already lost Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald for the year, both to season-ending injuries, and recently signed Odyssey Sims and Kyra Lambert just to patch up depth at guard.
Clark’s absence has certainly been felt, though the Fever have managed to hold their own without her. With her in the lineup, the team went 8-5, while they’ve gone 10-10 without her. But the truth is, her presence on the court changes everything. She’s averaging 16.5 points, 5 rebounds, and a league-second-best 8.8 assists in just 13 games — numbers that show exactly how vital she is to Indiana’s success.
Adding fuel to the conversation, sports personality Skip Bayless recently suggested the league might not be telling the full story, even speculating Clark could be done for the year. The Fever, however, have given no indication of that, insisting she is progressing steadily and will return when fully ready.
For now, Fever fans will have to be patient, watching their team take on the Mystics without their brightest star. Clark herself has admitted how tough this has been, calling it one of the biggest challenges of her career. And while the wait continues, one thing is certain — the moment she steps back onto the court will be one of the most anticipated returns in the WNBA this season.
