Canadian Crews Assist in Dramatic Airlift from Ruby Princess Cruise Ship
Earlier this week, a dramatic rescue unfolded off the coast of Washington state involving the Ruby Princess cruise ship. Two passengers, each facing severe medical emergencies, were airlifted thanks to a coordinated effort between Canadian and U.S. rescue crews.
The incident occurred on Sunday when the U.S. Coast Guard received an urgent call from the Ruby Princess reporting two passengers in critical condition. A 52-year-old woman had suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and was placed on life support, while a 99-year-old man experienced a complete esophageal obstruction, leaving both in immediate need of advanced medical care.

Canadian forces quickly responded by deploying a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter and a CC-295 Kingfisher aircraft from the Royal Canadian Air Force’s 19 Wing in Comox. Meanwhile, the U.S. Coast Guard dispatched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Port Angeles. The Kingfisher aircraft played a crucial role, acting as a spotter to maintain both visual and radio contact, coordinating the complex airlift operation.
During the operation, the Canadian crew was responsible for evacuating the female patient, who was transported to Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, B.C. At the same time, the male patient was airlifted by the U.S. crew to Neah Bay, Washington. The precision and cooperation between the Canadian and American teams ensured that both patients received critical care without delay.
This rescue marks the second recent instance of Canadian crews assisting U.S. counterparts in emergencies off the Washington coast. In late July, a Kingfisher aircraft provided oversight as a U.S. helicopter evacuated a Canadian mariner from a vessel near Oregon. These operations highlight the growing collaboration between cross-border rescue teams, especially in challenging maritime environments where timely intervention is crucial.
Officials praised the crews for their swift response, noting that the airlift was executed under demanding conditions. While the medical emergencies were unrelated, the combined efforts of both countries’ teams ensured that lives were saved. Such coordinated operations demonstrate the importance of international cooperation in maritime safety, where every second can make a difference.
As the Ruby Princess continues its voyages, this incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of life at sea and the vital role played by trained airlift and rescue personnel in protecting passengers’ lives.
