Minneapolis Catholic School Shooting Leaves Community Shattered
A tragic and deeply unsettling event has unfolded in Minneapolis, where a Catholic school became the site of a deadly shooting. It happened early in the school day, just after 8 a.m., as children were attending a worship service during their first week back at school. Shots rang out inside Annunciation Catholic School, leaving two children dead and 17 others injured.
The suspected attacker has been identified as 23-year-old Robin Westman, a man from suburban Minneapolis. He was described as being dressed in black and heavily armed with a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol. Police also found a smoke bomb in a vehicle believed to be his. Officials have said Westman acted alone, and while a manifesto had been timed for release on YouTube, the FBI intervened to remove it. His motive is still unclear, and at this point no clear connection has been confirmed between his family and the school.

Law enforcement rushed to the scene, with Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara stating that the city has been shaken to its core. He emphasized that hearts are broken for the families who lost their children, as well as for the many victims now fighting to recover.
The victims include two children, aged just eight and ten, whose lives were cut short. Fourteen other children were wounded, along with three elderly parishioners in their 80s. At Hennepin County Medical Center, doctors reported that several children were in critical condition, some requiring surgery. Thankfully, officials said that all those injured are expected to survive.
Mayor Jacob Frey spoke with raw emotion, pointing out that these were Minneapolis families, American families, whose pain is almost impossible to measure. He urged that the response must go beyond just “thoughts and prayers,” making clear that these children were literally praying when the attack happened.
Annunciation Catholic School, where this tragedy took place, serves children from preschool through eighth grade. It is a faith-based institution rooted in community values, even maintaining a sister school in Haiti. The principal, Matt DeBoer, appeared at a press conference and opened with a heartfelt message to the students and parents, saying, “I love you, I’m so sorry this happened today.” He urged people to not only pray but also take action to prevent tragedies like this in the future.
The community now faces the devastating aftermath of this senseless act of violence. Families are grieving, children are healing from both physical wounds and emotional scars, and Minneapolis as a whole is left grappling with shock and sorrow. While questions about why this happened remain unanswered, what is certain is that the city has been forever changed.
