Celebrating 79 Years of India’s Independence – A Journey Towards Naya Bharat
On the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu addressed the nation with heartfelt greetings, reminding us that this is not just a date in the calendar, but a powerful reminder of our collective struggle and pride as Indians. She reflected on the generations who, under colonial rule, dreamt of freedom, and whose sacrifices brought us liberty on 15th August, 1947. The day marks not only our independence but also the birth of our democracy — one that gave every adult citizen the right to vote, irrespective of gender, religion, or social status.
The President paid tribute to the victims of Partition, observed as Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas , and underscored the values enshrined in our Constitution — justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity — all rooted in human dignity. She noted the remarkable journey from the poverty-stricken days of 1947 to the thriving, confident India we see today, with a GDP growth rate leading major global economies and significant strides in infrastructure, healthcare, and digital innovation.
Highlighting achievements like expanded metro networks, rural tap water supply, Ayushman Bharat’s massive healthcare coverage, and India’s global leadership in digital payments, she emphasized that progress has reached the grassroots, reducing poverty and inequality. The President also touched upon the rise of Artificial Intelligence, the Make-in-India initiative, and Atmanirbhar Bharat, encouraging the purchase and use of Indian products.

Looking ahead, she placed her faith in youth, women, and historically marginalised communities to drive India towards becoming a developed nation by 2047. She lauded young achievers in sports, space, and entrepreneurship, and celebrated women breaking barriers in every field. Special mention was made of Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam , turning women’s empowerment into a tangible reality.
On national security, she recalled Operation Sindoor , a decisive and self-reliant military action against terrorism, which will be prominently honoured in this year’s celebrations. She also urged environmental responsibility, reminding us that the fight against climate change begins with changes in our own habits.
Meanwhile, preparations for Independence Day at the Red Fort are in full swing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the ceremony, unfurling the tricolour amidst a grand Guard of Honour and a 21-gun salute. The Air Force will coordinate the event, with flower petals showered from Mi-17 helicopters — one carrying the national flag and another symbolising Operation Sindoor. Special guests from across the nation, including sports champions, outstanding farmers, and national heroes, will witness the celebrations, while thousands of NCC cadets and My Bharat volunteers form the ‘Naya Bharat’ logo.
As the President concluded her speech, she called for unity, integrity, and a collective pledge to root out corruption, echoing Gandhiji’s words that corruption should never be an inevitable product of democracy. Her message was clear: India is on the march — bold, prosperous, self-reliant, and united — towards its vision of Viksit Bharat. Jai Hind!
