Chris Froome Seriously Injured in Training Crash
Four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome has once again faced a devastating setback in his cycling career. The 40-year-old British rider was airlifted to a hospital in Toulon, southern France, after suffering a serious crash during a training ride on Wednesday. His team confirmed that no other cyclists or vehicles were involved, and while he escaped head injuries, the list of damage was severe: five broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and a fracture in his lower spine.
Froome was conscious when paramedics reached him, and he was able to speak with medical staff before being taken by helicopter to hospital. On Thursday, he was scheduled for surgery to address the spinal fracture. His team, Israel-Premier Tech, described the incident as “serious” but reassured supporters that he is stable. Messages of support have since poured in from fans and fellow riders across the cycling world.

This crash adds to a painful history of injuries for Froome. Back in 2019, he endured one of the worst crashes of his career when he collided with a wall during training at the Critérium du Dauphiné, leaving him in intensive care with multiple fractures. That accident kept him away from the Tour de France and marked the beginning of a long battle to regain form. Even earlier this year, he broke his collarbone during the UAE Tour.
Despite these setbacks, Froome’s career achievements remain extraordinary. He claimed his first Tour de France title in 2013 and went on to dominate between 2015 and 2017, securing three consecutive victories. Only four men in history—Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, and Miguel Indurain—have surpassed his tally of four wins. In addition, Froome has won the Vuelta a España twice, the Giro d’Italia once, and earned two Olympic bronze medals in the time trial. His contributions to cycling were recognized in 2015 when he was awarded an OBE.
Yet now, questions will inevitably rise about his future. Froome himself has hinted that 2025 could mark his final year of professional racing. With this new crash likely ending his season and his contract with Israel-Premier Tech expiring at the end of the year, the path ahead remains uncertain.
