D-Backs Rally Around Ketel Marte Amid Team Frustrations
It’s been an eventful stretch for the Arizona Diamondbacks, and much of the spotlight has landed on star infielder Ketel Marte. Over the past week, reports surfaced suggesting that Marte’s teammates have grown frustrated with his occasional absences and requests for days off. The situation was only amplified after news broke that some within the organization may even be open to trade discussions involving him in the offseason.
But Sunday in Denver, something powerful happened. Following a crushing 6–5 loss to the Colorado Rockies, shortstop Geraldo Perdomo made an unplanned appearance during manager Torey Lovullo’s postgame interview. Perdomo stood beside his manager and delivered an emotional defense of Marte. His words weren’t scripted; they were spoken from the heart. He told reporters he was tired of seeing Marte criticized and made it clear that Marte simply wants to play baseball. Perdomo described Marte not just as a teammate, but as a brother, and asked the media to leave him alone. It was a moment that revealed just how deeply Marte is valued inside the clubhouse, despite outside chatter.

The game itself highlighted the D-Backs’ ongoing struggles. For the second straight day, the bullpen couldn’t protect a late lead. A 4–1 advantage unraveled in the seventh inning, as reliever Jake Woodford lost command, hitting batters and giving up key hits. The Rockies took the lead, and even though Arizona fought back in the ninth, the comeback fell short. Marte, who had been given a scheduled day off before entering as a pinch-hitter, made the final out on a popup that ended with a bizarre collision but a miraculous catch by Rockies pitcher Juan Mejia.
Lovullo acknowledged the frustration felt in the clubhouse but also praised Perdomo’s stand for Marte. He said it was no surprise, since Perdomo has always been the kind of player to step up for his teammates. Meanwhile, Lovullo explained that Marte’s day off had been carefully planned with input from the medical staff. The veteran has been producing at an elite level this month, batting well over .350 with power, but the manager wanted to ensure he stayed fresh for the stretch run.
Marte himself has dealt with more than just the physical grind. Earlier this season, he missed time after his home was burglarized during the All-Star break, an incident that reportedly left some teammates questioning his commitment. But despite the whispers, his on-field production has been undeniable. He remains one of the most impactful players on the roster, second only to Perdomo in overall value by advanced metrics.
