DeChambeau Secures Spot as Ryder Cup Teams Take Shape
The Ryder Cup is always one of golf’s most anticipated events, and this year’s contest at Bethpage Black in New York is no exception. The field is beginning to settle, and the automatic qualifiers for Team USA have now been locked in. Bryson DeChambeau, Russell Henley, and Harris English were officially confirmed as the final three automatic members, joining Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and J.J. Spaun. That brings the total to six players, with six more to be added through captain Keegan Bradley’s picks later this month.
DeChambeau’s qualification has been particularly eye-catching. Although he plays on the LIV Golf circuit, his consistency in major championships over the past 17 months—six top-10 finishes—was enough to secure his place. Russell Henley and Harris English also sealed their spots with strong showings at the BMW Championship, the final qualifying event. For context, Scheffler has been the dominant figure, claiming multiple majors and extending his world number one status, while Schauffele and Spaun have both collected majors of their own to underline their credentials.

The intrigue now shifts to Bradley, who faces the difficult decision of choosing six captain’s picks. His options range from established major champions like Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa, who missed automatic qualification, to Ryder Cup veterans such as Patrick Cantlay. There’s even the possibility that Bradley, currently 10th in the U.S. standings after a solid performance at the BMW, could name himself to the squad. That would echo a move not seen since 1963, when Arnold Palmer was the last playing captain for the Americans.
On the European side, the picture is also sharpening. Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, and Tyrrell Hatton have already guaranteed their places. Shane Lowry currently holds the sixth and final automatic spot, but Denmark’s Rasmus Højgaard could snatch it if he performs well at this week’s Betfred British Masters. Captain Luke Donald will announce his six wildcard selections on September 1, with Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, and Ludvig Ã…berg among the likely choices.
The battle at Bethpage promises to be fierce. Europe is chasing history, hoping to become the first team since 2012 to win away from home, while the United States will look to reclaim dominance after Europe’s 16½–11½ victory in Rome in 2023. With a mix of seasoned veterans and potential debutants on both sides, the stage is being set for another chapter in one of sport’s greatest rivalries.
As the lineups edge closer to completion, the question isn’t just who will make the teams, but who will rise to the occasion once the first tee shot is struck in New York. One thing is certain—the Ryder Cup always delivers drama, and this year will be no different.
