Disney Plus Shakeup Leaves Fans Reeling as Popular Shows Get the Axe

It’s been a whirlwind year for Disney Plus subscribers—and not always in the way they’d hoped. Disney recently revealed that Hulu + Live TV will be folded directly into Disney+, a move pitched as a way to give subscribers more content in one place. On paper, it sounds like a win. In practice, though, the big changes have brought an unexpected side effect: a wave of show cancellations that’s left fans feeling frustrated and blindsided.

As the company reshapes its streaming strategy, viewers have been forced to ask themselves if their favorite series will even make it to another season. So far in 2025, only a handful of shows have survived the renewal process: The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder for season four, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place for season two, Percy Jackson and the Olympians for season two, and Daredevil: Born Again for season two. Everything else seems to be on thin ice.

The cuts haven’t spared critically acclaimed titles. Extraordinary , a fan-favorite supernatural comedy, was axed before it could reach a third season. Historical mystery Shardlake , led by Sean Bean, also got the chop. And perhaps the most painful blow for many came with the cancellation of Goosebumps after only two seasons, despite its nostalgic connection to R.L. Stine’s beloved book series. While Sony Pictures Television is reportedly shopping Goosebumps to other networks, its departure from Disney+ has been met with outrage online.

Reactions have been swift and emotional. One fan lamented, “Disney made a big mistake,” while another blasted the decision to cancel nostalgic properties “when half the platform is filled with forgettable reboots.” A third summed up the mood more bluntly: “Disney is where properties go to die.”

Patterns in the cancellations suggest a strict, metrics-driven approach—anything that doesn’t deliver fast, measurable success appears vulnerable. Between 2020 and 2023, Disney reportedly canceled a higher percentage of its series than competitors like Netflix or Max, often pulling the plug after just one or two seasons, before audiences could grow. In 2023 alone, shows like Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. and The Mysterious Benedict Society were cut short despite promising fan followings.

Part of the shakeup may be linked to Disney’s costly acquisitions, including 20th Century Fox, which have led to tighter budgets. Some titles aren’t just being canceled—they’re being removed entirely from the platform, disappearing without a trace.

Still, there’s a glimmer of hope. A few canceled shows, including Goosebumps , may find second life elsewhere. And Disney hasn’t stopped rolling out fresh content, with new projects like Eyes of Wakanda and Raising Asia debuting soon. Whether those survive the platform’s stricter standards, though, is anyone’s guess.

For now, subscribers are left wondering if the next big hit they fall in love with will be here for the long haul—or vanish after just a season or two.
