Earthquake Surprises NYC and North Jersey, Shaking Felt Across Region
So last night, something pretty unexpected happened that got a lot of people talking — and honestly, a little shaken up. Around 10:22 p.m. on Saturday, August 2nd, a magnitude 3.0 earthquake was recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter was located in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, which is in Bergen County, just outside of New York City.
Even though 3.0 might not sound like much — especially compared to quakes we hear about on the West Coast — it was definitely strong enough to be felt. People across Northern New Jersey, including areas like Jersey City, Essex, Morris, and Bergen counties, reported feeling a sudden jolt or rumble. And it wasn’t just New Jersey — folks in parts of New York City and even upstate, like Rockland and Westchester counties, chimed in saying they felt it too.

As soon as it happened, social media lit up. People were posting things like, “Did anyone else feel that just now?” and “Was that an earthquake?” One woman in Jersey City even posted that she was on FaceTime with family in both Harrison and East Orange, and they all felt the shaking at the same time. Clearly, a lot of people were caught off guard.
Thankfully, there haven’t been any reports of damage or injuries, which is always a relief. And while the quake was relatively minor, the fact that it was so shallow — recorded at 0 km depth — meant the vibrations traveled more easily to the surface, making them more noticeable even at a distance.
Now, it’s worth pointing out that earthquakes aren’t very common in this region, which is exactly why even a small one like this tends to get a big reaction. It's one of those reminders that while we might not live in an active seismic zone, the Earth can still surprise us now and then.
So if you thought your house suddenly shook last night or your windows rattled a bit — you weren’t imagining it. A real earthquake was indeed felt in and around NYC and North Jersey. Nothing major this time, but definitely something people will remember.
