Fever Face Sky Amid Injuries and High Stakes
After a long four-game road trip, the Indiana Fever are finally back home at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, set to start a three-game homestand against the Chicago Sky this Saturday night. The Fever come in with a 17–14 record, still holding onto fifth place in the WNBA standings, but their recent stretch has been a bit rocky. They had a strong five-game winning streak from late July into early August, only to drop their last two games out west, including a tough 95–60 loss in Phoenix. That game wasn’t just a rough shooting night — hitting only 34.3 percent from the field and committing 22 turnovers — it also brought some costly injuries.
Veteran guard Sydney Colson left in the first quarter with a left knee injury, and starting point guard Aari McDonald hurt her right foot in the second half. The news got worse on Friday: Colson has a torn ACL and McDonald has a broken bone in her foot. Both are done for the season. And to make matters more challenging, All-Star Caitlin Clark is still sidelined with a right groin injury, marking her 10th straight missed game. Clark, who was the preseason favorite for league MVP, has already been out for 19 games this season with various injuries. There’s still no timetable for her return.

Even with the injury woes, Indiana has a prime opportunity in front of them. This homestand features matchups against Chicago, Dallas, and Washington — all sitting near the bottom of the league standings. The Fever have dominated the Sky so far this year, going 3–0 and winning by an average of more than 25 points per game. Saturday’s game will be the fourth meeting, with one more scheduled for September 5.
Chicago, at 8–22, has struggled mightily this season, winning just once in their last 10 games — a 78–64 victory over Washington earlier this week. Angel Reese, their standout second-year forward, leads the team in scoring at 14.2 points per game and also tops the entire WNBA in rebounding with 12.6 boards per contest. However, she missed Thursday’s game against Atlanta due to a back injury, so her status will be closely watched.
Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, August 9, with the game airing nationally on CBS and streaming options available on Fubo and Paramount+. For Indiana, the goal will be simple — overcome the depth challenges, take care of business against a struggling opponent, and build momentum before facing tougher competition later this month. Despite the setbacks, the Fever’s playoff push is still very much alive, and this homestand could be the key stretch that defines their season.
