Gallese the Hero as Orlando City Stuns Toluca in Leagues Cup
It was a night that will be remembered by Orlando City fans for a long time. Under the lights at Dignity Health Sports Park, the Lions battled Toluca in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Leagues Cup, and the hero of the story turned out to be none other than Pedro Gallese, the Peruvian goalkeeper affectionately known as “El Pulpo.”
The game itself was tense and grueling. Neither side could find the net across ninety minutes of regulation, leaving the score locked at 0-0. What followed was the high-stakes drama of penalty kicks, and it was in that pressure-packed moment that Gallese stepped into the spotlight. He not only saved two consecutive attempts during sudden death but also sealed the deal himself by converting the decisive penalty. With that, Orlando City advanced 6-5 on penalties, punching their ticket to the semifinals.

After the match, Gallese admitted that nothing less than survival was on his mind. “We had to go through no matter what,” he said, acknowledging both the intensity of the MLS–Liga MX rivalry and the determination of Orlando to keep pushing forward. His calmness under fire reflected the leadership that has made him such a cornerstone for the club since arriving in 2020, shortly after coach Óscar Pareja took charge.
Back then, Orlando was far from the contender it has now become. The team had languished in the lower half of the standings for years, but Gallese’s arrival brought stability between the posts and confidence to the defense. His performances helped Orlando reach the final of the MLS is Back Tournament in 2020, and from there, the Lions began a streak of playoff appearances that continues to this day.
In 2022, Gallese was part of the side that lifted the U.S. Open Cup—Orlando’s first major trophy. But while that triumph was historic, both he and the team believe bigger things are within reach. Last season, the Lions fell just short of the MLS Cup final. This year, with a potent attack led by Luis Muriel, MartÃn Ojeda, and Marco PaÅ¡alić, Orlando is among the league’s most dangerous sides, battling for top spots in the Eastern Conference and scoring goals at a remarkable rate.
The Leagues Cup, however, represents a unique opportunity. Winning it would not only deliver the most significant title in the club’s history but also secure a place in the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup. Gallese himself made that ambition clear: “We need a title,” he said. “We won the Open Cup in 2022, but we want more. This team has grown so much, and we’re at a very important level now.”
For Orlando City, the journey is far from over. A league clash with Nashville SC is up next, but all eyes are already turning toward a fiery Florida Derby against Inter Miami in the Leagues Cup semifinals. With Gallese in goal and confidence running high, the Lions know that another magical night could be just around the corner.
