Giants Finalize Initial 53-Man Roster for 2025 Season
The New York Giants have officially set their first 53-man roster for the 2025 season, a move that always brings excitement but also plenty of tough decisions. Every NFL team had until 4 p.m. on Tuesday to trim their offseason squads from 90 players down to the regular-season limit, and now the Giants’ group for Week 1 has been revealed. Of course, as fans know, these rosters are never truly final — adjustments are often made before the first kickoff, but this was the first big step toward the season opener against Washington on September 7.
To get to the required number, a long list of moves had to be made. Some players were waived with no recall, others were released as vested veterans, and a few landed on injured reserve or the physically unable to perform list. Among the more notable cuts was quarterback Tommy DeVito, the New Jersey native who once captured hearts by stepping in as an undrafted rookie and even rattling off three straight wins back in 2023. His release means the Giants will now move forward with a three-man quarterback room — veteran Russell Wilson, former first overall pick Jameis Winston, and rookie first-rounder Jaxson Dart.

Head coach Brian Daboll admitted that these days are among the toughest in football. Players, coaches, and families all feel the weight of the decisions, but it’s simply part of the business. Daboll explained that conversations with General Manager Joe Schoen and the scouting staff had been ongoing for weeks to figure out which mix of talent, experience, and potential would give the Giants their best shot this fall.
There were also some bright spots in this process. Every single member of the 2025 draft class made the cut, along with undrafted rookie receiver Beaux Collins, who turned heads throughout the summer. Collins, at 6-foot-3 and 206 pounds, showed his skills in both the passing game and special teams, even hauling in an 80-yard bomb from Russell Wilson in the preseason matchup against the Jets. Performances like that can turn a longshot into a roster lock, and Collins seems to be proof of it.
Still, the list of names let go was a reminder of how competitive the NFL is. In total, 23 players were released, 14 of whom had already appeared in a Giants regular-season game. Veterans like Stone Forsythe, Lil’Jordan Humphrey, and Jeremiah Ledbetter were among those cut, while younger players such as wideout Da’Quan Felton and corner Tre Hawkins were waived with injuries.
At this point, the Giants’ roster sits at 53, but waiver claims and practice squad assignments are just around the corner. New York currently holds the third spot in the claiming order, which means additional moves could be made soon. The final product is still taking shape, but for now, this is the group that will lead Big Blue into 2025. Fans will be eager to see how the blend of seasoned veterans and fresh rookies performs when the games begin for real.
