Jane Hazlegrove Extends Corrie Stay Amid Drama-Filled Wedding Twist
So, here’s a little bit of exciting — and dramatic — news from the cobbles of Coronation Street . Jane Hazlegrove, who plays the spirited and slightly chaotic Bernie Winter, has officially signed on for another year with the soap. Yep, Bernie isn't going anywhere anytime soon! This comes as a bit of a relief to fans, especially with recent cast shakeups and departures that have kept viewers on edge.
What’s funny, though, is the story behind how Jane originally joined Corrie. She revealed in an interview that her initial run was meant to be just 10 episodes — all because she needed money to renovate her bathroom! She joked about signing up just to afford a “nice white suite.” But what started as a quick gig ended up becoming a six-year journey, and counting. She’s now one of the show’s most recognizable faces, bringing plenty of heart — and mischief — as Bernie.

And speaking of mischief, the current storyline has Bernie heading down the aisle to marry Dev Alahan, played by Jimmi Harkishin. But — because it’s Corrie — things aren’t quite as simple as they seem. It turns out Bernie has a bit of a secret agenda behind the sudden wedding. She’s planning to use money meant for the big day to quietly pay off a debt caused by Dev’s son Aadi, who staged a robbery to try and fix some financial trouble. So while Bernie’s love for Dev is absolutely genuine, the quick, low-budget wedding has a hidden purpose.
Jane has said that Bernie doesn’t see it as a betrayal — more like protecting the people she loves, especially since she’s made her fair share of mistakes over the years. It’s that kind of flawed, impulsive loyalty that makes Bernie such a standout character.
Now, of course, the wedding isn’t going to be all sunshine and roses. First-look scenes have shown Bernie collapsing during the ceremony, with Dev’s daughter and her own daughter rushing to help. So while the celebration might take a dark turn, fans can breathe a little easier knowing Jane has signed a new contract. Bernie’s not being written out just yet.
Jane herself has also said she has no plans to jump into reality TV like some of her co-stars. In fact, she joked she’d get “cancelled in 10 seconds” because she’s too blunt and says things as they are — classic Bernie energy, really.
So, whether she’s scheming, collapsing, or pulling off another wild plan, it looks like we’ll be seeing plenty more of Bernie Winter — and Jane Hazlegrove — on Coronation Street in the year ahead.
