Jason Ritter Eyes a Crossover fromMatlocktoTracker
Jason Ritter is having quite a moment in television right now, and he’s not afraid to let fans in on some of his wild ideas for where his character could go next. Fresh off the shocking revelations in Matlock , Ritter admitted that he wouldn’t mind seeing his on-screen alter ego, Julian, pop up in another hit CBS series — Tracker , starring Justin Hartley.
In a recent interview, Ritter, who is 45, joked that maybe Julian should leave the law firm behind and team up with Hartley’s character, Colter Shaw. He imagined the two of them as “just two rugged guys” solving cases together. While he said it with a laugh, fans couldn’t help but picture the crossover and how fun that dynamic could be.
Ritter also opened up about how different Julian has become since viewers first met him. Back in season one, Julian was just trying to keep his messy personal life — including a divorce — neatly tucked away. But as Ritter explained, those secrets have now exploded into the open. The affair was revealed, and another big twist put Julian in an entirely new situation. There’s no hiding anymore, especially when it comes to his ex-wife, Olympia. Ritter pointed out that Julian can’t compartmentalize or push his shame into a dark corner. He has to face it.

For anyone who followed season one closely, the fallout makes sense. Julian was exposed as the man who hid documents that could have helped stop opioids from flooding the streets. That secret came out in the finale, at least to Olympia, and fans are left wondering whether she’ll keep it quiet or reveal the truth to Madeline “Matty” Matlock, played by Kathy Bates. Ritter admitted that Julian is now forced to grapple with the consequences of his choices — and that he’s terrified of what might come next.
At the same time, Ritter is clearly enjoying the creative ride. He praised Matlock ’s creator Jennie Snyder Urman and the writers for pushing his character in unexpected directions. He said he trusts their vision and feels lucky to show new sides of Julian this season.
Outside of television, Ritter is also stepping into a different kind of spotlight. He’ll be hosting the Festival of Arts’ California Dreamin’: A Benefit for the Arts in Laguna Beach. The event includes a live concert, a raffle, and the famed Pageant of the Masters , where living actors step into painted sets and create illusions that look exactly like works of art coming alive on stage. Ritter called it “magical” and “mind-blowingly beautiful,” saying he can’t wait to experience it again after seeing it once two decades ago.
So between juggling a complex role on Matlock , joking about teaming up with Justin Hartley on Tracker , and stepping into the art world as a host, Jason Ritter is keeping things exciting — both for himself and for his fans.
