JD Vance Meets David Lammy at Historic Chevening Before Countryside Holiday
So, here’s what’s happening — US Vice President JD Vance is in the UK this week, and not just for official business. He’s here with his family for a private holiday, but before heading off to the English countryside, he’s stopping by Chevening House, the UK foreign secretary’s official country residence, for a meeting with David Lammy. Now, Chevening isn’t just any old house — it’s a 400-year-old Grade I listed mansion set in acres of stunning gardens, complete with a lake and even a maze. The place has been the traditional retreat for foreign secretaries, and it’s as grand as it sounds.
Lammy and Vance have been meeting fairly often since Lammy took on his role last year, and despite being on opposite ends of the political spectrum — Lammy’s Labour, Vance is a conservative Republican — they’ve found a surprising amount of common ground. Both come from tough, working-class backgrounds, both have dealt with addiction issues in their families, and both share a strong Christian faith. In fact, earlier this year, Lammy attended Mass at Vance’s Washington residence, and now it seems he’s returning the hospitality.

The White House has said the two will talk about a range of issues affecting the US-UK relationship. Trade will likely be high on the list — the UK is trying to secure better terms for steel and aluminum exports to the US as part of a broader trade agreement announced in June. But the conversations probably won’t stop there. With the wars in Ukraine and Gaza still unresolved, these topics are almost certain to be part of the agenda. On Ukraine, there’s a difference in tone — US President Donald Trump has been pushing for direct talks with Russia’s Vladimir Putin, while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer insists Ukraine must be involved in any negotiations. On Gaza, the UK has said it will recognize a Palestinian state by September unless Israel acts to ease the humanitarian crisis, something Washington has warned could backfire.
Once the formalities at Chevening are over, Vance and his family will be heading to the Cotswolds — that picturesque, postcard-perfect slice of England that’s all rolling hills, stone cottages, and charming villages. It’s become a magnet for wealthy American visitors in recent years, and the Vance family is reportedly staying in the village of Charlbury, just west of Oxford. The area recently made headlines when celebrities flocked there for the wedding of Eve Jobs, daughter of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.
So, between high-level talks in a centuries-old stately home and a few days unwinding in one of Britain’s most idyllic regions, this trip is shaping up to be a mix of diplomacy and downtime — a very British blend of politics and pastoral charm.
