JD Vance Says He’s Ready if Tragedy Strikes Trump
In an exclusive conversation with USA Today , Vice President JD Vance opened up about his role in the White House, his readiness to take over if necessary, and his perspective on President Donald Trump’s health. He emphasized that while he is not “measuring the drapes” in the Oval Office, the past 200 days have given him significant on-the-job training that could prepare him for the top role if circumstances ever demanded it.

The comments came against the backdrop of ongoing speculation about Trump’s age and health. At 79 years old, he is the oldest person ever sworn in as president. Concerns have resurfaced in recent months after the White House disclosed that he had been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a condition that causes swelling in the legs. Trump’s physician described it as benign and common, pointing out that the bruising spotted on his hands was the result of minor irritation from frequent handshakes and daily aspirin use. Officials stressed that no serious cardiovascular or systemic issues were detected.
Despite these concerns, Vance painted a picture of a president who is energetic, tireless, and fully capable of leading. He noted that Trump often outpaces his much younger staff, making calls late at night and being the first to start work in the morning. According to Vance, “the president has incredible energy,” and his work ethic continues to inspire those around him.
The conversation also revisited the two assassination attempts Trump survived during the 2024 campaign trail. In July, he was grazed by a bullet during a rally in Pennsylvania, sustaining an injury to his ear. Weeks later, a second attempt was thwarted when a Secret Service agent identified a gunman lying in wait near Trump’s Florida golf course. These events, while alarming, reinforced the importance of readiness at the highest levels of leadership. Vance acknowledged the risks, saying, “Yes, terrible tragedies happen. But I feel very confident the president is in good shape, is going to serve out the remainder of his term, and do great things for the American people.”
At the same time, Vance made it clear that if duty were ever to fall on him, he would be prepared. He pointed to his nearly seven months as vice president as invaluable preparation, calling it the best possible training for the presidency short of holding the office itself. Still, his words carried both loyalty and reassurance, underscoring that Trump remains firmly in command while also signaling stability should the unexpected occur.
Ultimately, Vance’s message was twofold: confidence in Trump’s ability to continue leading, and readiness to step up if history ever demanded it.
