Liverpool intensifies pursuit of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi amid contract run-down
So here’s the latest buzz in the Premier League transfer scene — Liverpool are really pushing forward with their bid to sign Marc Guehi, the Crystal Palace captain and England centre-back. This story has been heating up over the past few days, and it looks like things could move quickly before the summer transfer window closes.
Marc Guehi, who joined Palace from Chelsea in 2021, is now 25 and has established himself as a key player for both club and country. Since arriving at Selhurst Park, he’s racked up more than 150 appearances, even becoming Palace’s captain. On the international stage, Guehi has earned 23 caps for England and was part of the squad that reached the Euro 2024 final. Clearly, he’s highly valued.
What’s making this transfer talk so urgent is Guehi’s contract situation. He only has a year left on his deal with Crystal Palace, which puts the club in a tricky spot. The chairman, Steve Parish, recently made it clear that Palace could be open to selling him this summer to avoid losing him for free next year. That means they want to cash in now rather than wait and risk him walking away without a transfer fee.

Liverpool, on their side, have reportedly already held initial talks with Palace about signing Guehi. But it’s not just about agreeing on a price between the clubs. Guehi himself will have to be convinced that moving to Anfield is the right step. The defender is a regular starter at Palace, and with a World Cup coming up, he’ll definitely want to be sure he’ll get plenty of playing time. After all, consistent first-team action is crucial for his international career.
Financially, this transfer could be a big one. Last year, Newcastle bid as high as £65 million for Guehi, but Palace held out. Now, with just 12 months left on his contract, Palace are reportedly willing to accept around £40 million. Liverpool, however, are aiming to negotiate that fee down. The Reds have already spent roughly £270 million this summer but have recouped about £170 million through player sales. They also made a huge £110 million bid for Alexander Isak, which was rejected, though he remains keen on a move to Liverpool.
It’s interesting to note that Liverpool are also targeting a young Italian defender, Giovanni Leoni from Parma, who’s just 18. He’s seen more as a future prospect rather than a direct competitor for Guehi’s spot.
All in all, if Liverpool manage to sign both Guehi and Isak, their summer spending will surpass £400 million — a hefty investment. But it shows the ambition they have to strengthen the squad. Whether Guehi will agree to the move depends on how Liverpool can guarantee him playing time, especially with a major international tournament on the horizon.
So, keep an eye on this one. With the transfer window closing soon, things could really heat up, and we might see Marc Guehi swapping Crystal Palace’s captain’s armband for a Liverpool jersey before long.
