Mecca's Bold Move: A Beauty Empire Rises on Bourke Street
Have you seen what’s just opened in Melbourne? Mecca’s brand-new flagship store has officially landed right in the heart of Bourke Street Mall—and it’s not just any store. It’s being called the “Mecca of all Meccas,” and honestly, once you step inside, it’s easy to see why. It’s three stories tall, takes up 4000 square metres, and is packed with over 80 beauty services. This isn’t just a place to shop—it’s an experience, a statement, and possibly one of the boldest moves in Australian retail in years.
This opening is a pretty big gamble, especially when you consider how much retail has shifted online. But Jo Horgan, Mecca’s founder and co-CEO, is doubling down on real-world beauty experiences. She’s the driving force behind this massive project, and from the way she talks about it, you can tell it’s a passion project. She’s described it as “an enormous risk”—and one that wouldn’t have been approved if Mecca were a public company. But being privately owned gives them the freedom to go big, and that’s exactly what they’ve done.

The store is in the old David Jones menswear building, which has been completely transformed while preserving key heritage features—think industrial-style metal windows and beautifully tiled floors. The entrance is a showstopper with its restored pink facade, and once inside, it’s like walking into a beauty wonderland. You’re greeted by a concierge, a mirrored carousel for sampling products, and spaces dedicated to makeup, skincare, and wellness.
There’s even a Mecca Apothecary with crystals and bath salts, and clinical beauty services like Botox and laser treatments are offered too. Upstairs, you’ll find a hair salon by Josh Wood, a nail bar, a café serving Meccatinis and Lune croissants, and a scent bar where “scent sommeliers” guide you through fragrance experiences. There's even a 200-seat auditorium and dozens of artworks by female artists—so it’s a cultural space as much as it is a retail one.
Mecca’s been around since 1997, when its first store opened in a tiny space on Toorak Road. Now, with over 110 stores and 7000 staff across Australia and New Zealand, this new flagship marks a huge leap. Despite rising costs and a more cautious retail market, Mecca is betting that people still want real-world experiences—and with over 4.6 million loyal customers, they just might be right.
So whether it sparks a retail revolution or simply stands alone as a beauty monument, one thing is clear: Mecca’s Bourke Street megastore is a love letter to Melbourne, to beauty, and to bold ambition.
