Mike Weir Excited to Return to Canada for Rogers Charity Classic
You know, playing golf in Canada seems to never get old for Mike Weir. The Canadian Golf Hall of Famer is gearing up to tee off once again in Calgary for the Rogers Charity Classic, which is being held at the Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club. This marks the fifth consecutive year that Weir, now 55 and hailing from Brights Grove, Ontario, will compete in front of home-country fans at this three-day PGA Tour Champions event, which runs from Friday through Sunday.
For Weir, this tournament is a special opportunity. “We only get to play in Canada once a year on this tour, so it’s great,” he mentioned. He’s genuinely looking forward to the fan support over the weekend, and he knows the course well. After finishing ninth back in 2021, Weir had a couple of challenging years, finishing 46th and 47th, but last year’s performance was solid. He shot rounds of 68, 67, and 67 on the Par 70, 7,086-yard layout, which put him in a tie for 20th overall. Feeling comfortable around the course now, Weir is hoping to get himself in contention by Sunday.

Of course, the competition won’t be easy. He’ll face strong players like Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez, New Zealand’s Steve Alker, and Ireland’s Padraig Harrington, who currently hold top spots on the senior tour’s Charles Schwab Cup money list. Weir knows that a fast start is key. “You have to start fast and get going early,” he said. “If you have an even-par round, it’s pretty hard to make that up.”
Past champions like Ken Tanigawa, who once tied the course record with a nine-under 61, will also be competing. The event has seen a number of repeat winners in its 12-year history, including Scott McCarron, and this year’s field is stacked with notable names, including two World Golf Hall of Famers, Harrington and Vijay Singh, along with Canadian Golf Hall of Famers Weir and Stephen Ames.
Local talent is also represented. Gordon Burns received a sponsor’s exemption for his second consecutive appearance, and Calgary’s Wes Martin secured a spot with an incredible nine-under 62 at the final qualifier, marking one of his best rounds ever. One day before his 50th birthday, Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey tied for second in the qualifier, rounding out a strong field of 78 players.
The stage is set for a thrilling weekend of golf in Calgary. With a US$2.5-million purse at stake, fans can expect intense competition, memorable shots, and the chance to see some of Canada’s favorite golfers shine on home soil once again.
