Omaha Braces for Late Day Showers, Cooler Weekend Ahead

Omaha’s weather is about to shift, and folks across the metro are keeping an eye on the skies as the end of the week approaches. For most of Friday, conditions are expected to be quite pleasant. The morning should bring comfortable temperatures, lower humidity, and generally dry air, making it a nice window to be outside. By lunchtime, the weather is still shaping up well, hovering in the 80s without much stickiness in the air.

But things may change later in the afternoon. By around 5 or 6 p.m., scattered showers or even a thunderstorm could develop. While coverage is expected to be fairly spotty, the potential for a strong storm has not been ruled out. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the region under a marginal risk, which means the chance of severe weather is low but still possible. If storms do develop, brief gusty winds or even some hail could occur, though most areas may just see passing showers.

This time of year still falls within the severe weather season, so these quick-hitting systems aren’t unusual. Models have shifted the focus of possible activity closer to Omaha, whereas earlier runs had indicated Des Moines. Because these showers are scattered, some neighborhoods could see rain while others remain completely dry.

The high for Friday is expected to reach around 88 degrees, and although precipitation has been limited so far this month, this round of activity could help break the streak. Along with the unsettled skies, another issue residents are feeling is high weed pollen. Even as the front moves through, only a short reprieve is expected before levels climb again. Unfortunately, until the first hard freeze arrives—which is still weeks away—pollen will remain a nuisance for many.

Looking beyond Friday, a shift toward cooler and drier air is in the forecast. By Saturday and Sunday, highs are expected to settle into the upper 70s and low 80s, which is below seasonal averages. Nights will feel even more refreshing, with lows dipping into the low 50s and some outlying areas potentially falling into the 40s. That means windows can be cracked open, and many will finally be able to give their air conditioners a break.

So, the message is pretty clear: enjoy the nice start to Friday, but keep an umbrella handy by late afternoon. A quick shower or thunderstorm might roll through before clearing gives way to a beautiful stretch of early fall-like weather. Omaha is about to trade its humid summer nights for crisp evenings and sweater-worthy mornings, a welcome change many have been waiting for.
