Oregon State Fair Celebrates 160 Years with Big Attractions

The Oregon State Fair has returned to Salem, and this year’s celebration is bigger than ever. Running from August 22 through Labor Day on September 1, the fair is marking its 160th anniversary with an exciting mix of new rides, attractions, food, and entertainment.

Fairgoers are being greeted with twelve brand-new carnival rides, making for a total of fifty-five thrilling options, thanks to Rainier Amusements. Among the highlights is the Diamond Ferris Wheel, said to be taller than any wheel the fair has seen before. For the younger crowd, Sunnyville offers fifteen kid-friendly rides, including favorites like Dumbo and Raiders-Minions. Those who love an adrenaline rush can test out “spectacular rides” such as Rampage, Freak Out, and Kamikaze. Carnival wristbands are being sold for unlimited rides, with pre-sale discounts helping families save before opening day.

But the rides aren’t the only star attractions. This year, the showstopper is Roaring Riptides Live!, where a massive pool serves as the stage for acrobats, dancers, and jet ski performers soaring across the water. The best part? Admission to this show is included with your fair ticket. Fans of speed and racing can also step into the NASCAR Experience, a simulator that places visitors behind the wheel of a race car for an authentic adrenaline ride.

Of course, no fair would be complete without food, and this year’s theme, “All the Flavors of Fun,” is living up to the promise. More than ninety food vendors are setting up shop, with thirty of them brand new to the fair. Korean corn dogs and Spam fries are the buzziest additions, alongside classics like deep-fried Oreos and Marionberry sundaes. For those who want to taste as much as possible without breaking the bank, “Sunny’s $3 Tasty Tour” on August 27 is offering smaller portions at a bargain price from nearly thirty participating vendors.

Shopping has also expanded with sunny-themed marketplaces. The Sunny Side is dedicated to kids and family fun, while the Sunflower Shops and Sunflower Square feature boutique-style vendors, antiques, and home essentials. Fairgoers strolling through these areas will find everything from handmade gifts to hot tubs and spices.

Entertainment is a big part of this year’s fair too, with the Columbia Bank Concert Series bringing a packed lineup. Acts include the All-American Rejects, Wynonna Judd, Cheap Trick, Sean Paul, and even the Beach Boys to close out Labor Day. Families will also enjoy barnyard races, baby animal encounters, horse shows, and Motor Mania events featuring bike stunts and demolition derbies.

Tickets remain affordable, with general admission starting at $10 for adults in pre-sale and always free for children under five. Seniors get in for just $3. Special discount days are planned, such as Kids Day and Heroes Day, making the fair accessible to families and community members.

With expanded grounds, more vendors than ever, and a wide range of entertainment, the Oregon State Fair is offering something for everyone. Whether visitors come for the rides, the concerts, the food, or just to soak up the festive energy, this milestone year is promising to be one of the most memorable yet.
