Out-of-Control Wildfire Forces Evacuations Near Nanaimo
A wildfire burning just northwest of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island is creating some serious concern right now. The blaze, known as the Wesley Ridge wildfire, has rapidly expanded and is officially out of control, prompting evacuation orders for nearly 200 homes, with close to 300 more properties placed on evacuation alert.
This fire was first detected on July 31 near the north side of Cameron Lake. Since then, it’s grown dramatically — it now covers an estimated 389 hectares, according to the BC Wildfire Service. Officials have confirmed that gusty winds, especially from the northeast, have been fueling the flames and pushing them closer to residential areas, which has made firefighting efforts even more difficult.

Evacuation orders have been issued for parts of Little Qualicum River Village, and these orders were expanded just this past Saturday. A provincial park in the area — Little Qualicum Falls Park — is also under evacuation, with day-use areas along Highway 4 closed to allow wildfire crews to do their job safely.
Although no homes have been lost so far, one historic structure hasn’t been as lucky. A railway trestle that held heritage value was destroyed by the flames. The damage could have been much worse, but fire crews — including over 60 personnel, helicopters, airtankers, and heavy equipment — have been working relentlessly to hold the fire back. Local fire departments from nearby communities like Coombs and Dashwood have also stepped in to support the BC Wildfire Service.
Officials believe this fire may have been caused by human activity, although that’s still under investigation. And even though Highway 4 remains open, travelers are being urged to stay alert and give space to crews working along the route.
To make matters worse, this fire is just one of over 140 burning across British Columbia. Since July 30, tens of thousands of lightning strikes have hit the province, especially in areas like Kamloops, Cariboo, and Prince George, sparking even more wildfires.
So while containment efforts are ongoing, the situation is still very dynamic. Residents in the area are being asked to stay prepared — and stay informed — as conditions could shift quickly. As we’ve seen with fires in the past, things can escalate in a matter of hours.
