Panthers Eye Eighth Straight Win as Titans Hold the Line Early
The Panthers are chasing their eighth straight win, and they’ve kicked off the action in Robina with real purpose against the Titans. This matchup is part of a jam-packed Saturday NRL and NRLW Magic Round schedule, and the energy is already running high.
The game got going with milestone man Jaimin Jolliffe taking the first hit-up for the Titans in his 100th NRL game—definitely a proud moment for him and a strong start for the home team. Penrith, true to form, wasted no time applying pressure. But early on, it was clear this wasn’t going to be a walk in the park.
There was immediate drama when Panthers co-captain Isaah Yeo went down hard in a gang tackle, landing awkwardly on his outstretched shoulder. It looked scary at first—everyone held their breath—but in true Yeo fashion, he shook it off and played on. That’s grit if we've ever seen it.

Then came the chaos. Yeo launched a last-tackle midfield bomb—honestly, it looked like a shank—but the ball took a bizarre bounce and nearly handed the Panthers an easy try. These are the moments where footy shows its unpredictability. Titans winger Phillip Sami couldn’t handle the bounce, and suddenly Penrith was attacking from just ten metres out.
On the Titans' side, they showed resilience early. Beau Fermor was inches away from opening the scoring after brushing off Nathan Cleary and powering through multiple defenders. Unfortunately, he just knocked on as he twisted toward the line. So close, yet no cigar.
There was also some controversy not long after. A grubber from Jacob Alick-Wiencke was fumbled by Dylan Edwards right in front of himself—it looked like a knock-on, and 999 times out of 1,000 it would’ve been called that. But not this time. The ref let it go, and play continued, much to the frustration of Titans fans.
Earlier in the day, NRLW history had already been made. The Titans’ women’s team and the Bulldogs played out the first ever NRLW draw in Magic Round history. It was pouring rain in Newcastle, and while Gold Coast led 14–4 at halftime, the Bulldogs clawed back thanks to Tayla Preston’s incredible leadership. Neither side could break the deadlock even after extra time. Both teams had field goal chances but just couldn't seal the deal.
All in all, it’s shaping up to be a cracker of a day for rugby league fans. The Panthers are looking sharp but the Titans have shown they won’t roll over. The stage is set—and there's plenty more footy still to come.
