Porepunkah Shooting Leaves Two Officers Dead and One Injured

A shocking incident has unfolded in the small Victorian town of Porepunkah, about 300 kilometers north-east of Melbourne, where what began as a routine police operation has turned into tragedy. Authorities have confirmed that two police officers have been killed and another injured following a shooting at a rural property in the area.

The incident began late on Tuesday morning, when officers arrived at the property to serve a warrant. It was during this operation that gunfire erupted. One officer was struck in the thigh and wounded, while two others were caught in what has been described by police sources as an ambush. Despite the best efforts of their colleagues, those two officers could not be saved.

This quickly escalated into what police are calling an “active and ongoing incident.” With the offender still at large, the situation remains extremely tense. Residents of Porepunkah, a town of just over a thousand people, have been told to stay indoors, lock their cars, and avoid the area entirely. Emergency services have been flooding into the town, with witnesses describing convoys of marked and unmarked police cars, ambulances, and even helicopters circling overhead.

At Porepunkah Primary School, less than a kilometer from the scene, the safety of children became the immediate priority. The school went into lockdown at 11:30 a.m., with all 106 students kept inside classrooms. Teachers drew blinds, locked doors, and followed emergency protocols while children were shown movies to keep them calm and distracted. Principal Jill Gillies reassured parents that everyone inside the school was safe and that they were acting under direct police advice.

Local business owners and residents have spoken about the surreal and unsettling atmosphere. One caravan park manager described it as “intense,” with the whole community effectively forced into hiding. Others noted that the number of police vehicles streaming through the area was unlike anything they had seen before.

Special Operations Group officers, heavily armed and trained for high-risk confrontations, were dispatched to the scene in the hours after the first emergency call came through around 11 a.m. Their role has been to secure the property, protect nearby residents, and locate the gunman believed to be responsible.

For a town known more for its alpine scenery and as a gateway to Mount Buffalo than for violent crime, the events of today have left many shaken. With such a small population, nearly everyone in Porepunkah either knows a police officer, a teacher, or someone caught up in the chaos.

Police have urged the public to stay away from the area until it is declared safe, emphasizing that the risk to the community is still high. Investigations are ongoing, and updates are expected once the immediate threat has been contained.

What is clear tonight is that two officers have paid the ultimate price while serving their community, another has been injured, and a normally quiet town is left reeling from an act of sudden and devastating violence.
