Rio Ngumoha’s Stunning Rise Ignites Hopes for Liverpool’s Future
You know, sometimes a young player does something so eye-catching in pre-season that it just forces everyone to sit up and take notice. That’s exactly what Rio Ngumoha has done at Liverpool — and people can’t stop talking about him. He’s only 16, soon turning 17, and already looks like a serious contender for first-team football at Anfield this season.
In Liverpool’s recent friendly against Athletic Bilbao at Anfield, Ngumoha started on the left wing for what was essentially a second-string side. But he didn’t waste a second. He scored a stunner just two minutes into the match — chasing down a loose ball deep in his own half, running the length of the pitch, and curling in a beauty from 20 yards. Then, just a few minutes later, he set up Darwin Nunez with a clever header after receiving a cross from Ben Doak. That’s a goal and an assist in five minutes.

By the time he walked off midway through the second half — to a standing ovation — fans were singing his name, and Curtis Jones even encouraged the crowd to give the youngster his dues. He was relentless with his dribbling, kept Bilbao’s defenders on their toes, and played with the kind of confidence that makes you forget he’s still technically a schoolkid.
And this wasn’t just a one-off. Ngumoha also impressed in earlier pre-season matches with a goal against Yokohama F. Marinos and an assist versus AC Milan. He’s not a Liverpool academy product either — he came over from Chelsea’s youth system just last summer. Even Chelsea legend John Terry called him a future top player when he left, and it looks like he was spot-on.
Now, considering all the changes happening up front at Liverpool — with Luis Díaz sold, Darwin Nunez linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, and Diogo Jota tragically passing away in a car accident — the attacking options are thinner than usual. If Nunez departs, there could be a real opening for someone like Ngumoha to step up. Right now, the main attacking names are Salah, new signing Hugo Ekitike, and Cody Gakpo. That leaves space for a bold young talent to get minutes — and Ngumoha might be that guy.
He’s already the second-youngest player ever to appear for Liverpool, making his debut in the FA Cup at just 16 years and 135 days old. And even though he hasn’t featured in the Premier League yet, that milestone might not be far off if he keeps this up.
As Ngumoha himself put it recently: he’s not in a rush, but he does want to show the manager what he’s capable of. And based on what we’ve seen this summer? He’s doing exactly that.
