Tesco’s Birthday Cake Sandwich Sparks Online Food Feud
So, Tesco has just launched a new sandwich – and let's just say, the internet is in meltdown mode over it. This isn’t your typical lunchtime fare either. It's a Birthday Cake sandwich . Yes, you heard that right. It’s essentially dessert disguised as a sandwich, and people don’t know whether to be delighted or horrified.
The sandwich, which costs £3 on its own or is available as part of Tesco’s meal deal, features brioche-style white bread stuffed with strawberry jam, soft cream cheese, rainbow sprinkles, and a swirl of vanilla frosting. Basically, imagine a Victoria sponge met a kid’s birthday party and got squished between two slices of bread.

As soon as this sugary creation hit shelves, reactions started pouring in on social media – and opinions are all over the place . Some people are practically sprinting to Tesco to grab one, declaring it the “best thing ever.” A few have even compared it to the nostalgic Aussie snack "fairy bread" – you know, buttered white bread with sprinkles. One person called it a "game changer," clearly loving the throwback vibes.
But on the flip side? There’s been no shortage of eye rolls. One person pleaded online: “For the love of God, make it stop,” while others described it as “utter filth” and “a horror.” Someone else summed it up with just one word: “Why?” Others are saying it's just a cake trying to sneak into the sandwich aisle, and they’re not having it. One particularly brutal comment called it a “diabetes sandwich.” Ouch.
This divisive new treat comes hot on the heels of the M&S strawberries and cream sandwich, which caused a similar stir earlier this summer. That one also featured sweetened bread and creamy filling, inspired by Japanese-style “sweet sandos.” Like the Tesco version, it was called both genius and gross, depending on who you asked.
Interestingly, these sugary sandwiches are blurring the line between dessert and lunch. Some are questioning whether they should even be allowed in the sandwich section. Is this really a sandwich or just cake with better marketing?
Whether it’s a clever twist or a culinary catastrophe, Tesco's Birthday Cake sandwich is clearly doing what it set out to do – get people talking. Love it or loathe it, it’s only around for a few weeks, so if curiosity’s got the better of you, now might be the time to grab one… or not.
