Severe Storms Expected to Hit Metro Detroit This Evening
Southeast Michigan is under a severe weather advisory today, and it’s shaping up to be one of those afternoons when you’ll want to keep an eye on the sky. The National Weather Service has announced that thunderstorms could roll through Metro Detroit starting after 2 p.m., with the most active period likely between late afternoon and around 10 p.m.
The advisory covers not only land areas but also portions of Lake Erie, Lake Huron, and Lake St. Clair. Storm activity is expected to develop in multiple rounds, which means the evening commute could be impacted for many. By nightfall, the strongest storms could pack wind gusts of 50 to 60 miles per hour—enough to bring down branches or cause minor damage—and dump heavy rain in short bursts, leading to possible localized flooding.

In terms of rainfall totals, Saginaw and Flint are in line to see the most, with as much as an inch possible. Metro Detroit will likely see less than half an inch overall, but localized pockets could get heavier downpours. Just last night, storms already left behind about 0.39 inches of rain in the area, according to the National Weather Service.
The pattern doesn’t stop there. There’s still a chance of showers on Wednesday, with scattered opportunities before 2 p.m., again between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., and then later in the evening. After that, the rain threat will ease until Sunday, when another round of showers or storms could develop.
Temperatures will be another talking point this week. Highs are forecast to climb into the upper 80s and lower 90s, with nighttime lows hanging around the 70s. This August has already recorded two days at 90 degrees or hotter, and while the historical average high for the month is about 81.4 degrees, we’re running warmer than normal.
If you’re wondering about the longer outlook, the second half of the week should be calmer, with sunshine and less humidity moving in thanks to high pressure. That means Thursday and Friday could offer some relief before the weekend heat returns.
So, the takeaway: if you’re in Metro Detroit today, be prepared for stormy weather this afternoon and evening, possibly strong winds, and quick bursts of heavy rain. Secure anything that could blow around, check on travel plans, and keep your phone alerts handy—you may need them before the night is over. And while the storms will eventually pass, summer’s heat is planning to stick around a bit longer.
