Surfer’s Miracle Escape in Cabarita Shark Attack
A dramatic scene unfolded this morning at Cabarita Beach on the NSW Far North Coast, where a surfer experienced what can only be described as a miracle escape. Around 7:30am, local resident Brad Ross was enjoying a morning surf when his board was suddenly struck by a shark. The animal took such a clean and powerful bite that the surfboard was snapped in half—yet somehow Brad himself was left untouched.
Images quickly surfaced online showing Ross holding up what was left of his board, the massive bite mark clearly visible. Many described the escape as nothing short of extraordinary. This incident comes just weeks after a series of warnings about heightened shark activity in the same region. In late June, a 16-year-old boy was bitten multiple times while swimming off Norries Headland, only managing to escape by kicking the shark away. Not long after, a bull shark was also spotted offshore. These events have reinforced concerns about safety along this stretch of coast, which is popular with both locals and tourists.
Authorities are now examining the bite on Ross’s board to better determine the size and species involved, though early reports point toward a great white. For now, locals are being strongly advised to stay out of the water until beaches are reopened and safety measures are confirmed.
While encounters with sharks are not uncommon in Australia, the scale of this near miss has sparked conversations about just how unpredictable the ocean can be.
