The Office Returns (Sort Of) With Peacock’s New Series 'The Paper'
So, here’s something exciting for fans of The Office — while Dunder Mifflin isn’t reopening its doors, a spiritual successor is officially on its way. It's called The Paper , and it’s dropping its first season on September 4th on Peacock. And yes, it’s set in the same universe as The Office , with the same documentary crew behind the camera. This time, though, the story shifts from a Scranton paper company to a struggling local newspaper in Toledo, Ohio, called The Truth Teller .

The premise is classic mockumentary: the crew that once followed around the chaotic employees of Dunder Mifflin is now searching for their next big story. That search leads them to this outdated, rundown newspaper that’s hanging on by a thread. And running the show? Ned Sampson, played by Domhnall Gleeson, who steps in as the editor-in-chief, full of passion, purpose — and not nearly enough help.
The big twist? No one on his new “staff” has actually worked at a newspaper before. One person brags about writing a term paper in junior high. Another proudly points to their social media experience. One guy is just in a group chat. It’s absolute chaos. But Ned doesn’t quit, and thank goodness, because that chaos is where the comedy kicks in.
If that wasn’t enough to get Office fans buzzing, Oscar Martinez — yes, the same Oscar played by Oscar Nuñez — is back. He’s dragged into this new adventure, and from the trailer, let’s just say he’s not thrilled about being followed by cameras again. He’s cranky, sarcastic, and as fed up as ever.
The cast is packed with new faces: Sabrina Impacciatore, Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, and more. Already, fans are having fun trying to figure out which characters resemble the OGs from The Office . Esmerelda, played by Impacciatore, is already being compared to a female version of Michael Scott.
Behind the scenes, the show is in great hands. It’s created by The Office ’s own Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, with Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant on board as executive producers. Even some of the original directors from The Office have returned for this — which adds to the familiar tone.
The Paper will roll out four episodes at launch, followed by two episodes each Thursday until the 10-episode season wraps on September 25. So, while Dunder Mifflin may be gone, its spirit definitely lives on. And now, instead of selling paper, they’re reporting the news — kind of.
