Tony Haynes to Retire After Nearly Three Decades with NC State
After nearly three decades of bringing the sounds, energy, and excitement of Wolfpack athletics to fans, Tony Haynes has announced that the 2025 football season will be his last as a broadcaster. This marks the end of an era for NC State sports, as Haynes has been a fixture on the sidelines, behind the mic, and in the booth for 28 years.
Haynes’ voice has been part of the Wolfpack Sports Network since the late 1990s. Over the years, he’s worn many hats—serving as a sideline reporter for football, a basketball analyst, and even calling baseball play-by-play. For fans, his voice wasn’t just part of the game; it was woven into the experience of following NC State.

In a statement released by the university, Haynes reflected on how his journey began. As a teenager, he would listen to the legendary voices of Wally Ausley and Garry Dornburg call NC State games and think, “That would be a cool job.” Decades later, he was able to live that dream, and as he put it, “Well, it has been.” He expressed deep gratitude to administrators, coaches, student-athletes, and, of course, Wolfpack fans who fueled his passion for so long.
The appreciation flowed both ways. Kyle Winchester, General Manager of Wolfpack Sports Properties, praised Haynes as “a fantastic ambassador for NC State for almost three decades.” He highlighted Haynes’ professionalism, deep knowledge of the game, and passion that could be felt through every broadcast.
Haynes’ broadcasting journey stretches back to his college years. A 1984 graduate of NC State, he first sharpened his skills as sports director at the student-run station WKNC 88.1 FM. After graduation, he worked at WKIX 850 in Raleigh as both a disc jockey and sports reporter before branching out to cover Duke athletics and serving as a sports anchor for the North Carolina News Network. But it was with NC State that he truly left his mark, becoming a trusted voice for generations of Wolfpack faithful.
Looking ahead, the 2025 football season will be more than just another campaign for NC State—it will also serve as a farewell tour for Haynes. Each game will carry an extra layer of nostalgia, as fans know they are hearing him on the sidelines for the final time.
For many, Tony Haynes wasn’t just reporting on the Wolfpack—he was part of the Wolfpack. His words captured the highs, the heartbreaks, and the unforgettable moments of nearly 30 years of NC State sports. And when the final whistle blows on the 2025 season, his legacy will remain etched into the fabric of Wolfpack history.
