Trump Pushes for Putin-Zelensky Peace Talks After DC Summit
President Donald Trump has taken another step in his effort to bring an end to the war in Ukraine, and it’s being described as one of the most significant diplomatic pushes in recent years. After hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and a group of European leaders at the White House, Trump revealed that he personally called Russian President Vladimir Putin to start working on the next phase of negotiations.
According to Trump, the call was made immediately after Monday’s meetings in Washington. He explained on his Truth Social account that he had begun arranging a face-to-face meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy, with the goal of moving the peace process forward. Trump even confirmed that once that meeting takes place, a trilateral discussion would follow, involving himself alongside the two presidents. He framed it as a crucial early step toward resolving a conflict that has now stretched on for nearly four years.
Reports indicate that Trump’s phone call with Putin lasted around 40 minutes. Russian officials described the exchange as “candid and constructive,” adding that Putin expressed support for direct talks with Ukraine. European leaders present at the White House were also kept in the loop, and Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz suggested that Putin agreed in principle to meet with Zelenskyy within two weeks.

At one point during the day, Trump was caught in a hot-mic moment speaking quietly with French President Emmanuel Macron. While that statement raised eyebrows, it underscored Trump’s belief that he can play a unique role in brokering an end to the conflict.
For his part, President Zelenskyy expressed gratitude after the talks. He described the negotiations in Washington as long and detailed, covering everything from battlefield conditions to the return of Ukrainian children and prisoners being held by Russia. Zelenskyy highlighted that the United States had signaled readiness to support future peace guarantees and emphasized that a direct leaders’ meeting would be essential for addressing sensitive issues.
Trump, however, has surprised many observers by backing away from the idea of an immediate ceasefire. While European leaders pressed him to push for one, he argued that the focus should instead be on achieving a final peace deal. His position represents a notable shift, since just days earlier he had insisted that a ceasefire was a necessary step.
Still, Trump insisted that progress was being made and hinted that the long-awaited trilateral meeting between himself, Putin, and Zelenskyy was not a question of if, but when. European leaders, though cautious, acknowledged that momentum had been created. The stakes are high—not only for Ukraine, but for the entire European security framework.
