UEFA Super Cup 2025 Set for Udine Showdown Between PSG and Tottenham Hotspur
Hey, have you heard about the upcoming UEFA Super Cup? It's happening soon, and it’s shaping up to be an exciting clash! This year, the match is scheduled for Wednesday, August 13, 2025, kicking off at 8:00 PM BST. The venue will be the Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy — a stadium with a capacity of about 25,000 seats, which is the home ground of Serie A’s Udinese. It’s interesting to note that since the fixture moved away from Monaco in 2012, this will be the 13th different stadium to host the Super Cup.
Now, the UEFA Super Cup is a unique annual event where the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League face off to claim European bragging rights. This season, we’re guaranteed a new champion because Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), who have been runners-up before, will be going up against Tottenham Hotspur, making their debut in this fixture. PSG earned their place after a stunning 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League final, while Spurs booked their ticket by narrowly defeating Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final back in May.

To give you some history, the Super Cup was originally created by a Dutch reporter named Anton Witkamp back in the early 1970s as a way to determine the top club team in Europe. The first-ever Super Cup was contested between Ajax and Rangers in 1972, but it wasn’t officially recognized by UEFA until a year later. Initially, it was played between the European Cup winners and the Cup Winners’ Cup champions. However, after the Cup Winners’ Cup was discontinued in 1999, the Super Cup evolved into a yearly battle between the Champions League and Europa League champions. Interestingly, the winners of the newer Conference League, introduced in 2021, do not take part in this competition.
Speaking of records, Real Madrid are the most successful club in the history of the Super Cup, having lifted the trophy six times. They also happen to be the current holders after their 2-0 victory against Atalanta in 2024, with key goals from Federico Valverde and Kylian Mbappé.
As for how the venue is chosen, UEFA now allows football associations from its member countries to bid to host the match. After a thorough review process involving visits and inspections, the UEFA executive committee picks the host stadium. This bidding system replaced the long-standing tradition of hosting the match in Monaco, which was the fixed venue from 1998 until 2012.
Oh, and if you’re curious about the prize money, the winners will take home five million euros (around £4.3 million), while the runners-up receive four million euros (approximately £3.4 million). It’s quite a lucrative reward for a single match!
So, if you love football, this Super Cup clash between PSG and Tottenham promises to be a thrilling encounter, blending history, fresh talent, and a great atmosphere at a beautiful Italian stadium. Mark your calendars for August 13th and get ready for some top European football action!
