What’s Open and Closed on Civic Holiday in Toronto
Hey! So with the Civic Holiday coming up on Monday, August 4th, a lot of folks are wondering what’s actually open and closed around Toronto and the GTA. It’s a long weekend, and even though the Civic Holiday is widely observed, it’s not a statutory holiday in Ontario—which means employers aren’t required by law to give people the day off. So while many businesses will be closed or operating on reduced hours, there’s still quite a bit happening across the city if you're planning to head out.
Transit-wise, the TTC will be running on a holiday schedule—that’s similar to Sunday service, except it starts earlier, at 6 a.m. If you're taking the GO Train, just know they’ll be following their Saturday schedule instead. And if the ferry to Toronto Island is part of your weekend plans, be prepared for bigger crowds than usual—it’s expected to be busy.
When it comes to government services, Canada Post won’t be delivering mail, and Service Canada offices will be closed. ServiceOntario centers are a bit trickier: some will be open with regular hours, others completely closed, so it’s best to check online for the one nearest to you.

Now, grocery stores and pharmacies—yes, most will be open but usually with reduced hours. So it’s a good idea to call ahead or check online. Some LCBO stores and Beer Stores will be open too, but again, only select locations and with modified hours. Most major banks will be closed for the day.
If you're thinking about hitting up a mall, here’s a quick rundown of their Civic Holiday hours: Eaton Centre, Sherway Gardens, Yorkdale, and several others will be open from around 11 a.m. to 6 or 7 p.m., while places like Pacific Mall and Shops at Don Mills are open a bit later.
As for things to do, Toronto’s got no shortage of options. The Toronto Caribbean Carnival is taking over parts of downtown with parades, performances, and road closures, so plan accordingly. Woodbine Park is hosting the Toronto Food Truck Festival all weekend, and the new Biidaasige Park has opened with cool features like playgrounds and interactive spaces for kids.
You can also visit the Art Gallery of Ontario—it’s usually closed on Mondays, but this Civic Holiday it’s open. Other attractions like the CN Tower, Toronto Zoo, Ripley’s Aquarium, Casa Loma, and the Royal Ontario Museum will all be welcoming guests, most during their regular hours.
And finally, if you're up for some thrill, Canada’s Wonderland is open all day Monday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with fireworks on Sunday night around 10 p.m. So whether you’re looking to relax, shop, or explore the city, there’s something happening for everyone this long weekend.
