Wilmington Gas Explosion Linked to Vehicle Crash
Earlier today, a major gas explosion shook Wilmington near New Centre Drive, leaving a building heavily damaged and several firefighters injured. The chaos began around 11:30 a.m. when a vehicle struck the Eastern Carolina Veterinary Referral building at 5051 New Centre Drive. The impact ruptured a gas line, triggering a series of explosions that caused significant destruction.
Emergency responders were immediately on the scene. According to Wilmington Fire Chief Steve Mason, there were actually two separate explosions inside the building. Firefighters described seeing an initial blast, followed by an even larger one that caused much of the structure to collapse. Smoke and debris filled the area, forcing authorities to block off New Centre Drive entirely for public safety.

Three firefighters were injured while battling the blaze. One of them sustained severe burns on the hands, while another received non-life-threatening injuries. Two of the injured firefighters were treated and released, but the condition of the third remains more serious. The dedication of the emergency crews has been widely recognized, with their swift response preventing potentially worse outcomes.
Law enforcement quickly determined that the driver involved had left the scene but was located and arrested. The suspect has been identified as 46-year-old Jason Lee Beach from Wilmington. He has been charged with multiple offenses, including felony DWI causing serious injury, possession of drug paraphernalia, hit-and-run, reckless driving, and failure to maintain lane. Beach is currently being held under a $100,000 secured bond at the New Hanover County Detention Center. Authorities believe impairment played a role in the crash.
Investigations are ongoing, with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol examining the details of the incident. In the meantime, both the Wilmington Police Department and Fire Department remain actively involved in securing the area and ensuring public safety. Residents and commuters have been asked to avoid New Centre Drive and the surrounding area until further notice.
This building, which was expected to open next month, suffered extensive damage, and cleanup is expected to take considerable time. Witnesses, including local videographer Ian Cross, captured dramatic footage of the scene, showing the intensity of the explosions and the immediate response by emergency personnel.
For now, the situation remains under close watch, and authorities are urging the public not to tie up emergency lines with non-essential calls. The courage and quick action of first responders have been highlighted throughout the day, and the community continues to rally around those affected by this alarming incident.
