AFL legend Mick Malthouse injured in Melbourne home invasion
Mick Malthouse, one of the most respected and successful coaches in AFL history, has been caught up in a frightening ordeal at his East Melbourne apartment. In the early hours of Thursday morning, around 12:30am, a group of men reportedly tried to break into his home. Instead of staying inside, Malthouse confronted the intruders and chased them into a nearby laneway. It was there that the 72-year-old was assaulted before the offenders fled on foot.
Police have confirmed that a resident of the property was attacked while pursuing the offenders, and although Malthouse suffered minor injuries, he declined medical treatment at the scene. Despite the shock and the assault, both he and his wife, Nanette, are said to be doing fine now. ABC Sport’s content director Tim Verrall shared that he had spoken to the couple, and while they were understandably shaken, their spirits remain steady.
Malthouse’s reputation in Australian football is legendary. As a player, he was part of Richmond’s 1980 premiership team. As a coach, his career stretched across several decades and produced some of the most memorable moments in AFL history. He guided West Coast to its first premierships in 1992 and 1994, cementing the club’s place as a powerhouse. Later, he famously took Collingwood to the ultimate success in 2010, delivering the Magpies a flag in front of a packed MCG.

Beyond the premierships, Malthouse became known for his intensity, his tactical mind, and his ability to shape football clubs with discipline and belief. More recently, he has stayed close to the game through media work, serving as a commentator with ABC Sport. For many fans, his voice and insights remain an important part of the football conversation.
This incident has understandably rattled the football community, as Malthouse is not only admired for his achievements but also respected as a stalwart figure who has given so much to the game. The idea that someone of his age and standing would be put in such a dangerous position at his own home has sparked concern.
Police are continuing their investigation into the attempted home invasion. No arrests have yet been made, and the offenders remain at large. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward.
For now, the most important thing is that Malthouse is safe and recovering, even if the experience has left him shaken. His resilience is well known from his football days, and once again it appears that resilience has been called upon—this time in circumstances far removed from the sporting arena.
This story serves as a reminder that no one is immune from such incidents, even household names. But for Malthouse, who has faced the toughest challenges both on and off the field, this frightening night will no doubt be remembered as just another test of his enduring toughness.
