Bruce Highway Crash Sparks Police Hunt in Canoona
A major police operation has been unfolding in central Queensland after a dramatic incident on the Bruce Highway. The crash, which happened around midday near Canoona—about 60 kilometres north of Rockhampton—has led to the closure of part of the highway and the declaration of an emergency zone.
Authorities reported that two vehicles were involved in the collision, and soon after, one of the individuals linked to the crash fled on foot into surrounding bushland. At 1:42pm, police enacted a Public Safety Preservation Act exclusion zone, stretching across a two-kilometre radius along Kunwarara Road. That means residents within the area have been asked to remain inside their homes while the search continues.

Helicopter support was called in through the Capricorn Rescue Service, and ground crews remain active at the scene. The person police are searching for is understood to be known to them, though no further details have been shared about their identity at this stage. Initially, authorities believed multiple occupants had run from the crash, but later clarified that the search was centred on one individual.
Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed that paramedics attended shortly after the crash. A woman was taken to Rockhampton Hospital in a stable condition, while emergency workers continued assisting others at the site. Police and rescue personnel have been working under difficult conditions as bushland and highway traffic present challenges for both safety and logistics.
Motorists are being urged to avoid the area, as no official detours have been designated. The closure is already causing disruptions on this major route between Yaamba and Marlborough.
