Authorities said that on September 10, the 62-year-old chef walked into three different banks in the city’s Central District, each time handing tellers notes that demanded money. Out of fear, employees complied, handing over cash before Luchin fled the scenes.

The first robbery reportedly happened just after noon at a bank in Chinatown. Police explained that once the suspect obtained cash, he left quickly, only to strike again at two more banks later the same day using the same method. Investigators, with help from community tips and SFPD ambassadors, quickly identified Luchin as the suspect. He was arrested without resistance and booked into the San Francisco County Jail. His bail was set at $200,000, and he now faces charges of robbery and attempted robbery.

But this is not his first run-in with the law. Back in 2018, Luchin admitted to robbing a Citibank in Orinda, California. In that incident, he stole more than $15,000 and was arrested within hours at a nearby parking lot. At the time, he told reporters he had been overwhelmed by financial pressures after the closure of his restaurant and claimed desperation drove him to crime. He even insisted the weapon he carried was only a BB gun and that he never intended to harm anyone.

Luchin’s life tells a story of dramatic highs and lows—rising from Italy’s Veneto region to become a respected chef in the United States, only to face financial ruin and criminal charges. Bankruptcy records from several years ago showed the heavy debts he and his family carried. In past interviews, he admitted that desperation had pushed him into choices he never thought he would make.
