Canucks Prospects Fired Up for Showcase Weekend
Hockey is officially back, and the Vancouver Canucks are wasting no time bringing some excitement to their fans. This weekend, the first glimpse of the future will be on display as the Canucks’ top young players and draft picks suit up for the 2025 Prospect Showcase against the Seattle Kraken. Coached by Manny Malhotra, the roster is stacked with talent—some already familiar names and some fresh faces eager to make an impression.
Malhotra summed it up perfectly when he said the group came in “bright-eyed and bushy-tailed,” ready to learn and show what they can bring. That energy is exactly what makes a showcase like this so special. The lineup includes big names like former first-rounders Jonathan Lekkerimäki, Tom Willander, and Braeden Cootes. Defensively, the Canucks will lean on Kirill Kudryavtsev and Elias Pettersson—better known to fans as D-Petey—who both got NHL experience last season. In net, second-round pick Aleksei Medvedev will share duties with Aku Koskenvuo, who is entering his first season of pro hockey after a solid college career.
For Braeden Cootes, the Showcase feels like step one toward something bigger. The 18-year-old centre is fresh off captaining the Seattle Thunderbirds and Canada’s U18 team. Last year, he was over a point-per-game in the WHL and added playoff production on top of it. When asked about the weekend, Cootes admitted how exciting it feels to put on the Canucks gear, skate with players his age, and just play his game. For him, this is both an opportunity and a challenge to prove he belongs.
One storyline to watch closely is the Swedish defensive duo of Willander and Pettersson. They already have chemistry from international play at the World Juniors, and both are thrilled to pair up again. Willander praised Pettersson’s defense-first approach, while Pettersson described Willander as a good partner and teammate. It’s the type of partnership the Canucks hope can grow into something reliable at the NHL level.
On offense, the top practice line combined size and skill: 6’6” Vilmer Alriksson joined Cootes and Lekkerimäki, forming a trio with speed, shooting, and presence around the net. Lekkerimäki, in particular, has been turning heads with his scoring touch, and this weekend will be another chance to show why he’s considered the Canucks’ top prospect.
The games are set for Saturday in Everett and Sunday in Seattle. While the results matter less than the development, fans will be glued to the ice to see which players stand out.
