Claire Sweeney Confirms She Won’t Join Brookside Revival
Fans of classic British soaps have been buzzing with excitement about the return of Brookside , the trailblazing Liverpool-based drama that first hit screens back in 1982. But one of its most famous stars, Claire Sweeney, has now confirmed that she will not be taking part in the much-anticipated revival.
Claire, best known for her role as Lindsey Corkhill between 1991 and 2003, has ruled herself out of the one-off special. When asked about the show’s return, she expressed nothing but admiration, saying, “It’s wonderful that it’s coming back. But I’m not doing it.” Her absence is largely down to her current role on Coronation Street , where she joined in 2023 as Cassandra Plummer and has since become a fan favorite.

Even though she won’t be stepping back onto Brookside Close as Lindsey, Claire’s affection for the show remains clear. She recalled an emotional visit to the iconic cul-de-sac with her son, describing how she was overcome with tears when standing in front of her old on-screen home. That connection to the place and the memories attached to it shows just how significant the show still is to her, even if she isn’t returning on screen.
Meanwhile, filming for the revival has already begun, and a number of beloved stars are making their comeback. Sue Johnston and Ricky Tomlinson have reunited to reprise their roles as Sheila and Bobby Grant, the working-class couple who originally anchored the series. Ricky shared his excitement, saying how much he looked forward to being back on the Close alongside Sue after so many years. For fans, their return feels like a proper homecoming.
The special, airing next month on Channel 4, will not only celebrate Brookside ’s legacy but also serve as a crossover with Hollyoaks , which grew out of the same production company and even shared sets. Alongside Johnston and Tomlinson, viewers can expect appearances from Paul Usher as Barry Grant, Suzanne Collins as Nikki Shadwick, Philip Olivier as Tim “Tinhead” O’Leary, Michael Starke as Sinbad, and Louis Emerick as Mick Johnson.
Producers have described the project as a “love letter” to Brookside and its legacy, recognizing the way it reshaped British TV drama by portraying working-class life with grit and realism. It’s also being framed as a tribute to the show’s creator, Sir Phil Redmond, and to late stars like Dean Sullivan, who memorably played Jimmy Corkhill.
So while Claire Sweeney won’t be part of the revival, she has made it clear that her support is firmly with the cast and crew. Fans can still look forward to seeing some of the most iconic faces back on screen, keeping alive the spirit of a soap that defined a generation. The Close may not have Claire this time, but the sense of nostalgia and celebration will still be running high.
